Gold Fever In 1849 alone, 80,000 people moved to California to stake their claim in the hopes of making their fortune in gold Gold was first discovered in California at Sutter’s Mill in 1848 Prospectors were mostly Americans, but immigrants from all over the world also went to California to try to strike it rich San Francisco was at the center of this gold rush, and it quickly grew from a small frontier town to a major trade center
