A computer is a general purpose device that can be programmed to carry out a set of arithmetic or logical operations.  What are the vairables of computer? * Cpu / Gpu performance * Price * Purpose of product * Size * Weight * Ergonomy * Background/foreground * font * interaction/warning system * etc... What is HCI ? What is Interaction? What are the variables of Interaction? Interaction is a kind of action that occurs as two or more objects have an effect upon one another. To count variables of interaction in between human and computer is a bit early for now. This course is mainly about the proper ways of interaction in between computer and human. Proper HCI design will change; * Time spend on same functions * Frequency of errors in application * Learning speed of new users * Prefering or eleminating product * Focusing towards needs * Expence / profit rate * etc... 7 What is HCI ? Two best known lists of user interface design guidelines were given at page xiii in “Designing With The Mind In Mind - Simple Guide To Understanding User Interface Design Rules” book as given below; Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

8 1. Strive for consistency.
What is HCI ? – Shneiderman & plaisant - 1. Strive for consistency. Consistent sequences of actions should be required in similar situations; identical terminology should be used in prompts, menus, and help screens; and consistent color, layout, capitalization, fonts, and so on should be employed throughout. Exceptions, such as required confirmation of the delete command or no echoing of passwords, should be understandable and limited in number. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

9 2. Cater to universal usability.
What is HCI ? – Shneiderman & plaisant - 2. Cater to universal usability. Recognize the needs of diverse users and design for plasticity, facilitating transformation of content. Novice to expert differences, age ranges, disabilities, and technological diversity each enrich the spectrum of requirements that guides design. Adding features for novices, such as explanations, and features for experts, such as shortcuts and faster pacing, can enrich the interface design and improve perceived system quality. 10 3. Offer informative feedback.
What is HCI ? – Shneiderman & plaisant - 3. Offer informative feedback. For every user action, there should be system feedback. For frequent and minor actions, the response can be modest, whereas for infrequent and major actions, the response should be more substantial. Visual presentation of the objects of interest provides a convenient environment for showing changes explicitly. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

11 4. Design dialogs to yield closure.
What is HCI ? – Shneiderman & plaisant - 4. Design dialogs to yield closure. Sequences of actions should be organized into groups with a beginning, middle, and end. Informative feedback at the completion of a group of actions gives operators the satisfaction of accomplishment, a sense of relief, a signal to drop contingency plans from their minds, and an indicator to prepare for the next group of actions. For example, e-commerce web sites move users from selecting products to the checkout, ending with a clear confirmation page that completes the transaction. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

5. Prevent errors. As much as possible, design the system such that users cannot make serious errors; for example, gray out menu items that are not appropriate and do not allow alphabetic characters in numeric entry fields. If a user makes an error, the interface should detect the error and offer simple, constructive, and specific instructions for recovery. For example, users should not have to retype an entire name-address form if they enter an invalid zip code, but rather should be guided to repair only the faulty part. Erroneous actions should leave the system state unchanged, or the interface should give instructions about restoring the state. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

13 6. Permit easy reversal of actions.
What is HCI ? – Shneiderman & plaisant - 6. Permit easy reversal of actions. As much as possible, actions should be reversible. This feature relieves anxiety, since the user knows that errors can be undone, and encourages exploration of unfamiliar options. The units of reversibility may be a single action, a data-entry task, or a complete group of actions, such as entry of a name-address block. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

14 7. Make users fell they are in control.
What is HCI ? – Shneiderman & plaisant - 7. Make users fell they are in control. Experienced users strongly desire the sense that they are in charge of the interface and that the interface responds to their actions. They don’t want surprises or changes in familiar behavior, and they are annoyed by tedious data-entry sequences, difficulty in obtaining necessary information, and inability to produce their desired result. 15 8. Reduce short-term memory load.
What is HCI ? – Shneiderman & plaisant - 8. Reduce short-term memory load. Humans’ limited capacity for information processing in short-term memory requires that designers avoid interfaces in which users must remember information from one screen and then use that information on another screen. It means that cell phones should not require re-entry of phone numbers, web-site locations should remain visible, multiple-page displays should be consolidated, and sufficient training time should be allotted for complex sequences of actions. What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 1. Visibility of system status The system should always keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback within reasonable time. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 2. Match between system and the real world The system should speak the users' language, with words, phrases and concepts familiar to the user, rather than system-oriented terms. Follow real-world conventions, making information appear in a natural and logical order. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 3. User control and freedom Users often choose system functions by mistake and will need a clearly marked "emergency exit" to leave the unwanted state without having to go through an extended dialogue. Support undo and redo. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 4. Consistency and standards Users should not have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing. Follow platform conventions. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

5. Error prevention Even better than good error messages is a careful design which prevents a problem from occurring in the first place. Either eliminate error-prone conditions or check for them and present users with a confirmation option before they commit to the action. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 6. Recognition rather than recall Minimize the user's memory load by making objects, actions, and options visible. The user should not have to remember information from one part of the dialogue to another. Instructions for use of the system should be visible or easily retrievable whenever appropriate. Flexibility and efficiency of use Accelerators -- unseen by the novice user -- may often speed up the interaction for the expert user such that the system can cater to both inexperienced and experienced users. Allow users to tailor frequent actions. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

23 8. Aesthetic and minimalist design
What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 8. Aesthetic and minimalist design Dialogues should not contain information which is irrelevant or rarely needed. Every extra unit of information in a dialogue competes with the relevant units of information and diminishes their relative visibility. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 9. Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors Error messages should be expressed in plain language (no codes), precisely indicate the problem, and constructively suggest a solution. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS

What is HCI ? – Nielsen & Molich - 10. Help and documentation Even though it is better if the system can be used without documentation, it may be necessary to provide help and documentation. Any such information should be easy to search, focused on the user's task, list concrete steps to be carried out, and not be too large. Lecturer: Gokhan GUMUS
