Presentation on theme: "Walk-In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box."— Presentation transcript:

1 Walk-In Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. Take out your pink study guide and your Cell Functions sheet. Copy the question and answer: Why is a computer a good picture for representing the nucleus of a cell?

2 Answer A computer is a good picture to represent the cell because a computer makes decisions and keeps track of information, like the nucleus of a cell. The nucleus makes decision for a cell using the DNA inside it. DNA contains genetic material (genes) which program a cell to be a certain way.

3 Walk-In Take out folder, pencil box and notebook. Hand in your Cell City to your class’s pile on the demo table, if you took it home to finish. Copy the question and answer in sentences: How is the job of the nuclear membrane and the cell membrane similar?

4 Membranes Membranes are the OUTER COVERING of something.
They protect what is inside them. They are SEMIPERMEABLE, meaning they allow certain substances to pass through, but not others. Membranes allow materials to enter and exit what is inside.

5 CELL UNIT REVIEW VOCABULARY AND FUNCTIONS

6 CELL STUDY GUIDE Vocabulary list shows word and definition or explanation. Highlight the Five Organelles to Know. Focus on the structure and functions of these five. Know the differences between animal and plant cells.

7 Two Day Review Today: crossword puzzle, then answering questions about cell terms. Tomorrow: practice essay questions and review game.

8 Essay Question #1 Observe your diagram of a plant cell and an animal cell. In what ways are they the same? In what ways are they different? Be specific and discuss the differences in structure and function.

9 Answer A plant cell has different organelles than an animal cell. It needs a cell wall to provide structure, support and protection for the cell. It needs chloroplasts to help the plant make its own food during photosynthesis. A plant cell is more square in shape than an animal cell. It has a much larger vacuole so it can store food, since it has to make its own food.

10 Essay Question #2 Compare and contrast a cell wall and a cell membrane. Discuss their structure and function in your answer.

11 Answer The cell wall and cell membrane are both located on the outside of the cell. They both protect the cell. Only a plant cell has a cell wall. It provides structure and support. The cell membrane allows materials to go in and out of the cell. These are similarities and differences of the two structures.

12 Essay Question #3 Why do scientists consider the microscope to be such an important discovery in biology (life science)?

13 Answer The microscope allowed scientists to see things that were too small to be seen with the naked eye. This made it possible to see cells, and the organelles inside cells. Discoveries in medicine, germs and ways to prevent diseases followed.

14 REGROUP! A’s at table 1 and 2 B’s at table 3 and 4
Bring your pink study guide and Cell Function sheet with you. Sit as follows: A’s at table 1 and 2 B’s at table 3 and 4 C’s at table 5 and 6 D’s at table 7 and 8

15 Stump the Expert Teams Sit with your team.
Have your pink study guide and Cell Functions sheet out. Be ready to ask a stumping question! Take a turn at being the expert if you stump the person answering the questions!
