1 Again? YES. Why? BECAUSE IT’S COOL.
Conditionals Again? YES. Why? BECAUSE IT’S COOL.

2 If simple present, simple present
SUMMARY Conditional 0: If simple present, simple present First conditional: If present tense, any form of the future Second conditional: If + past (simple or continuous), would + verb Third conditional: If + past perfect (S or C), would have + p. participle

3 MIXED CONDITIONALS When we talk about mixed conditionals, we are referring to conditional sentences that combine two different types of conditional patterns. These combinations are not all that frequent, but the most common combination is when we have a type 3 conditional in the if-clause (if + past perfect) followed by a type 2 conditional (would + infinitive) in the main clause.   mixed third / second conditional  With this combination we are contrasting an imagined or real event in the past with the present result of that. Consider these examples:  If he'd taken the medication, he wouldn't still be lying sick in bed.  If she'd taken reasonable precautions, she wouldn't be pregnant now.  If he hadn't run after the car thief and suffered a heart attack, he'd probably be alive today.

4 MIXED CONDITIONALS mixed second / third conditional
The other possibility, though I think this is less common, is when we have a type 2 conditional in the if-clause (if + past simple) followed by a type 3 conditional (would've + past participle) in the main clause.  With this combination, we are describing ongoing circumstances in relation to a previous past event. Consider these examples:  If you weren't such a poor dancer, you would've got a job in the chorus line in that musical.

5 TASK 1 I don’t think you need more practise on conditionals anymore or do you? Write a setence (affirmative, negative or question) using a conditional 0, a first conditional, a second conditional and a third conditional.

6 TASK 2 1. If the city ___________ (be) still a tourist attraction, many more people (die) ___________ in the earthquake. Luckily it's a ghost city nowadays. 2. If I __________ (not be) afraid of flying, I ___________ (fly) to Paris. But I'm terrified of planes so I drove in the end. 3. If I ___________ (work) harder when I was young, I ___________ (not be) a poor man now. But I'm too old to change anything.

7 TASK 2 4. If I ___________ (know) more about computers, I ___________ (not have) to call the Help Desk yesterday. But I don't have a clue. 5. If I ___________ (study) German in school, I ___________ (have) more job opportunities nowadays. But I chose English instead and I can't speak a word of German. 6. If I ___________ (be) rich, I ___________ (buy) her a diamond ring for her birthday last month. But I'm absolutely broke. 7. If I ___________ (not have) to work so much, I ___________ (go) to the party last weekend. But I've been snowed under ever since I changed jobs.

8 1. If the city WAS (be) still a tourist attraction, many more people WOULD HAVE DIED (die) in the earthquake. Luckily it's a ghost city nowadays. 2. If I WASN'T (not be) afraid of flying, I WOULD HAVE FLOWN (fly) to Paris. But I'm terrified of planes so I drove in the end. 3. If I HAD WORKED (work) harder when I was young, I WOULDN'T BE (not be) a poor man now. But I'm too old to change anything. 4. If I KNEW (know) more about computers, I WOULDN'T HAVE HAD (not have) to call the Help Desk yesterday. But I don't have a clue. 5. If I HAD STUDIED (study) German in school, I WOULD HAVE (have) more job opportunities nowadays. But I chose English instead and I can't speak a word of German. 6. If I WAS (be) rich, I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT (buy) her a diamond ring for her birthday last month. But I'm absolutely broke. 7. If I DIDN'T HAVE (not have) to work so much, I WOULD HAVE GONE (go) to the party last weekend. But I've been snowed under ever since I changed jobs.
