1 Status and Progress of NSW HUB and Extension
NEW HUB V2 Status and Progress of NSW HUB and Extension 11-Oct-2016 Marco CIAPETTI

2 Introduction The results of the Market Survey lunched in May 2016, forced us to deeply revise the central HUB.  It was not possible to find companies able to forge such huge pieces of copper The design of a new version of the HUB is still on going.  Different possible ideas are currently under evaluation Chile is still willing to collaborate in in-kind-contribution for the copper supply and maybe for the supply of the final part. Serguei Kuleshov is in contact with several firms which claim to be able to do the centrifugal casting The reduction in shielding power can be increased for some of the presented solutions Charlie Young is running simulations to understand if a longitudinal sandwich of different materials could help 11-Oct-2016

3 HUB + Extension NSW Hub 2015 (OBSOLETE) NSW Hub 2016 (OBSOLETE)
The new version of the Hub will be made (as in the current SW) with an external part in stainless steel and several forged pieces of copper interlocking each other inside NSW Hub 2015 (OBSOLETE) Also the central tube will be in stainless steel due to the needs of lifting devices. The maximum local reduction in shielding is around 7% NSW Hub 2016 (OBSOLETE) NSW Hub (WORK IN PROGRESS) Modifications: Reasons: Size of the pins reduced from Ø100 to Ø30  Not necessary according to FEA Rail for feet replaced by standard pins  Simplify assembling, standardization Rod connection modified  Simplify machining, cost reduction New machining for lifting eyebolts  Simplify assembling, standardization The 2016 version must be changed. Design still on going  Too difficult to forge these dimensions in copper 11-Oct-2016

4 HUB+ Extension V2 475mm 230mm Stainless steel Stainless steel Copper?
Stainless steel must be austenitic steel with low Cobalt content. Almost all stainless steel parts are bolted together (only exception for the front flange) Shielding material can be pure copper or a sandwich of different materials (copper + lead + polyboron) 11-Oct-2016

5 HUB+ Extension V2 – Solution 1
Full copper pieces realized with centrifugal casting COPPER COPPER COPPER COPPER Several companies are in contact with Serguei (e.g. HESAM+SORENA) and claim to be able to do the job Giancarlo doubts that a centrifugal casting can exceed mm in thickness. He asked for some more details on 04/10/2016, but so far we did not receive any answer 11-Oct-2016

6 HUB+ Extension V2 – Solution 2
Concentric pipes realized with centrifugal casting COPPER COPPER COPPER COPPER This proposal has been already mentioned in Giancarlo’s mail of 04/10/2016 and it should be discussed with Chilean companies as soon as possible 11-Oct-2016

7 HUB+ Extension V2 – Solution 3
25mm thick disks piled up and pressed along Z direction COPPER COPPER COPPER COPPER According to Giancarlo’s analytical calculations, a force of N (around 180 Tons) is needed to press together 25mm thick disks with a flatness of 2mm to reach a packing factor of 96-97%. This can be done with the M20 screws, but the stainless steel plates would deform around 4-5mm 11-Oct-2016

8 HUB+ Extension V2 – Solution 4
5mm thick disks piled up and pressed along Z direction COPPER COPPER COPPER COPPER According to Giancarlo’s analytical calculations, a force of N (around 14 Tons) is needed to press together 5mm thick disks with a flatness of 1mm to reach a packing factor of 96-97%. This can be done with the M20 screws, but the stainless steel plates would deform around 0.5-1mm 11-Oct-2016

9 Conclusions More solutions can be studied once the results of Charlie’s calculation will be available (one or two weeks at minimum) The interface between the HUB and the Extension, leave an unshielded portion of 78mm. This is valid for all the presented solutions. A possible way to solve this problem is using Copper-Beryllium (instead of stainless steel) for those plates Solutions 1 or 2 are preferable from a shielding point of view: Absence of gaps Shielding layout already modelled and studied in detail 11-Oct-2016
