2 What is MetaArchive? MetaArchive Cooperative is a digital preservation network created and hosted by and for memory organizations. The mission of the MetaArchive Cooperative is to foster better understanding of distributed digital preservation methods and to create enduring and stable, geographically dispersed “dark archives” of digital materials that can, if necessary, be drawn upon to restore collections at Member organizations.

4 What is the ETDplus Project?
Lifecycle Management of ETDs project to research and build tools to help manage a growing challenge in ETD programs such as the creation and submission of materials beyond the PDF of a thesis or dissertation.

Help students make sure that their research outputs are stored and maintained in durable formats and on durable devices; Help students make informed decisions about file formats, documentation, and rights.

6 In a 2014 survey of nearly 800 students across nine universities
Fully 80% of these students are producing non-PDF research outputs

7 Training students to manage ETD+ research outputs
ETD+ Toolkit Training students to manage ETD+ research outputs The ETD+ Toolkit provides introductory training in a series of crucial data curation and digital longevity techniques. It has been designed as a training tool to help students identify and offset risks and threats to their digital research footprints. Brought to you by Educopia Institute; funded by the Institute of Library and Museum Services. The ETD+ Toolkit is an approach to improving research output management. Focusing on the Electronic Thesis and Dissertation (ETD) as a mile-marker in a student’s research trajectory, it provides in-time advice to students about avoiding common digital loss scenarios for the ETD and all of its affiliated files. The ETD+ Toolkit provides introductory training in a series of crucial data curation and digital longevity techniques. It has been designed as a training tool to help students identify and offset risks and threats to their digital research footprints.

8 What is the ETDplus Tool Kit
An open set of six modules and evaluation instruments that prepare students to create, store, and maintain their research outputs on durable devices and in durable formats. Each is designed to stand alone; they may also be used as a series.

9 What each module includes:
Learning Objectives, An evaluation Survey. A one-page Handout, Each module is released under a CC-BY license and all elements are openly editable to make reuse as easy as possible. A Guidance Brief that can be customized for your campus, A Slideshow with full presenter notes,

10 Who it is for: Anyone may freely adopt and adapt this toolkit. We especially recommend its use by administrators, faculty, and librarians teaching students and by students seeking practical advice about digital content management.

12 Begin by visiting: https://educopia.org/publications/etdplustoolkit
Getting Started Begin by visiting: Select the ETD+ Toolkit link at the top of the page to access the Google Drive folder in which all of the ETD+ Toolkit materials are maintained. Select the ETD+ Toolkit link at the top of the page to access the Google Drive folder in which all of the ETD+ Toolkit materials are maintained.

13 Once you’re in the Google Drive folder, you’ll see seven folders—one “About the Toolkit,” and one folder for each of the six modules. Inside the “About the Toolkit” folder, you’ll find this ETD+ Toolkit At a Glance guide. You’ll also find two slideshows, each with full trainer notes.

14 One slideshow is the Administrator’s Guide
One slideshow is the Administrator’s Guide. It teaches administrators about emerging methods to support students’ digital object management and helps them consider how to structure or improve their ETD programs. The other is the Student Overview. It covers why digital content is ephemeral and offers an overview of the workshop curriculum.

15 Now, if you step back to the main Google Drive folder, you’ll see the six modules, each in its own folder. Now, if you step back to the main Google Drive folder, you’ll see the six modules, each in its own folder.

16 Getting Started (cont.)
Each of these six modules is structured the same, with five key elements: • Learning Objectives • Handout • Guidance Brief • Slideshow (with full presenter notes) • Surveys (pre and post)

19 Give us feedback (Please)
Like the modules? Hate them? Think they’re unique? Redundant? Please help us to refine the workshops and report back to our funder about how and where they are being used. Because these materials have been produced under a grant-funded project, we are requesting feedback that we can share with our funder and that we can use to improve the Toolkit.

20 How to access the Toolkit
Use the link below to access the toolkit. You will have access to an openly downloadable set of google docs and google slides and evaluation instruments that you may use in any way you want during and after the pilot. As you do so, you may also opt into an instructor listserv we will maintain throughout the pilot period by ing with the subject line ETD+ Toolkit Listserv.

ProQuest Carnegie Mellon University Colorado State University HBCU Library Alliance Indiana State University Oregon State University Penn State University Purdue University University of Louisville UNC School of Library and Information Science University of North Texas University of Tennessee Knoxville Virginia Tech University So, who created the Toolkit? Here’s the team. Note the diversity of voices. There are individual university libraries and consortia; open communities like NDLTD and commercial players like ProQuest. There are also educators—specifically, UNC-CH SILS. The group also included data wizards and librarians, ETD administrators and folks who contributed ETDs when they were PhD candidates themselves. That range is evident as you look at the Guidance Briefs, the ETDplus Workbench, and the workshop modules.
