Rebellion and Redemption Our Goal Jesus has won the decisive victory. The challenge has always been where we place our loyalties. The controversy still rages and the deceptions are ever-present. Our prayer, then, is that this quarter’s lessons will reveal some of these deceptions and thus help us not just to choose Christ but to remain with Him.

7 The Church Militant Key Text Revelation 3:20 NKJV “ ‘Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.’ ” Susing Talata.

9 We shall concentrate only on his description of the seven churches.
The Church Militant Initial Words We shall concentrate only on his description of the seven churches. One challenge is that these churches are shown to be struggling with their identity, just as we are today. Though we see ourselves as the last of these churches, in many ways we face some of the same challenges that the churches faced through the ages. Panimulang Salita.

10 To...Pergamos...says He who has the sharp two-edged sword....”
The Church Militant 1. The First Three Churches Revelation 2:1, 8, 12 NKJV To...Ephesus...says He who holds the seven stars...who walks in the midst of the seven golden lampstands.... To ...Smyrna...says the First and the Last, who was dead, and came to life.... To...Pergamos...says He who has the sharp two-edged sword....” 1. (Apocalipsis 2:1, 8, 12).

11 Jesus is pictured holding the seven
1. The First Three Churches Ephesus Jesus is pictured holding the seven stars and walking among the lamp-stands. The lampstands are the churches, and the seven stars are angels tasked with caring for the churches (Rev. 1:20). There is a close connection between the churches and the throne of God in heaven. The churches have a crucial part to play in the great controversy. Efeso.

12 1. The First Three Churches
Ephesus The message begins with a description of its character: patient perseverance, and intolerance toward false teachers in their midst (Rev. 2:2, 3, 6). It has suffered a counterattack by Satan. It came in the form of false apostles, followers of Nicolas.

13 The trouble was that it had left its“first love” (Rev. 2:4).
1. The First Three Churches Ephesus The trouble was that it had left its“first love” (Rev. 2:4). Jesus encourages His people to remember from where they have fallen and to get back to what they were doing in the first place (vs. 5).

14 1. The First Three Churches
Smyrna and Pergamum Smyrnans are known for their hard work; yet, they don’t have much to show for it, maybe as a result of a “synagogue of Satan” (Rev. 2:9). Similarly, the members at Pergamum seem to be clinging to their faith, even though “the throne of Satan” is among them (vs. 13). Thus, the reality of the great controversy is seen here, as well. Smirna at Pergamo.

15 In Pergamum someone already
1. The First Three Churches Smyrna and Pergamum Smyrna is warned of tough times ahead, including prison and maybe even death (vs. 10). In Pergamum someone already had been killed for his faith (vs. 13). Apparently they are tolerating people in their midst who hold to the doctrine of Balaam and Nicolaitans (see vss. 14, 15).

16 and His feet like fine brass....
The Church Militant 2. The Fourth and Fifth Churches Revelation 2:18, 3:1 NKJV To...Thyatira...says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and His feet like fine brass.... To...Sardis...says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars.....” 2. (Apocalipsis 2:18, 3:1).

17 2. The Fourth and Fifth Churches
Thyatira and Sardis At Thyatira (2:18) is an increasingly trying and perplexing time for the people of God. The metaphors of fiery eyes and feet of polished brass or bronze are also found originally in Daniel 10. At the end of time, when the situation is darkest for God’s people, God Himself will directly step in to deliver. Tiatira at Sardis.

18 In Sardis, Jesus has the seven Spirits
2. The Fourth and Fifth Churches Thyatira and Sardis In Sardis, Jesus has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars (3:1), a Savior who is involved behind the scenes and enlisting the powers of heaven to ensure the safety of His church. Thyatira (2:19), have been like Israel at the time of Queen Jezebel. Similarly, in Sardis, the people are spiritually dead (3:1).

19 2. The Fourth and Fifth Churches
Thyatira and Sardis Encouragements: To Thyatira, “many have not known the depths of Satan” and “hold fast...till I come” (2:24, 25). To Sardis, “a few have not defiled their garments” (3:4). Promise: To Thyatira, the “morning star” (2:28). To Sardis, an assured place in heaven and confess their names “before My Father” (3:5).

The Church Militant 3. The Sixth and Seventh Churches Revelations 3:7, 14 NKJV To...Philadelphia...says He who is holy, He who is true, “He who has the key of David, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens.... To...the Laodiceans...says the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God....” 3. (Apocalipsis 3:7, 14).

21 3. The Sixth and Seventh Churches
Philadelphia Philadelphia is commended for keeping Christ’s word and for not denying His name, even though their strength appears to be quite weak (3:8). Philadelphia, It seems, is the one who finally rids the church of the synagogue of Satan, the source of evil. Filadelfia.

22 3. The Sixth and Seventh Churches
Philadelphia Philadelphia had passed through times as tough as the previous churches, but their attitude seems to have been different. This is the first church that Jesus doesn’t specifically point out a failing that they need to work on. Their faith and their cooperation with God has been appreciated by the Savior, again despite their “little strength” (3:8).

23 Descriptions that are key aspects of
3. The Sixth and Seventh Churches Laodicea Descriptions that are key aspects of the divinity of Christ: The “Amen” translated in Isaiah 65:16, “the God of truth” and is linked to the covenant. Jesus is the God who keeps His promises of salvation and restoration. Jesus is also the Faithful Witness who testifies to His people about what God is really like. He is also the Creator. Laodicea.

24 as they really are and to be changed
3. The Sixth and Seventh Churches Laodicea The Laodecians have been fooling themselves to the point that what they think about themselves is the opposite of what they really are (3:17). Jesus pleads with them to take the necessary steps in order to have the clarity of vision needed to see things as they really are and to be changed as they need to be changed (vs. 18).

25 Why do they apply so well
The Church Militant Final Words Many who profess to be looking for the speedy coming of Christ, are becoming conformed to this world.... They are cold and formal.... The words addressed to the Laodicean Church, describe their present condition perfectly.”—The Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, June 10, 1852. Why do they apply so well to us, even today? Huling Pananalita. Sila’y malamig at pormal....
