B157 Renovation on Meyrin Site
C. Gasnier & S. 3 technical issues with roof / ceiling: 1) Ceiling contains asbestos – danger to safety 2) Ceiling / roof are almost uninsulated – loss of energy 3) Roof is not waterproof* – rain penetrates interior Option Asbestos Insulation Waterproofing* 1) New false ceiling below existing - (Impossible to pierce existing asbestos-containing material) + = 2) Replace false ceiling 3) Remove false ceiling / replace roof Beyond the 3 above criteria, option 3 has the following advantages / disadvantages: - 1 intervention to ensure next life cycle of roof (building is 55y old) - 1 intervention of complex site installations - 1 period of co-activity with physics - Waterproofing of the building to be ensured during works Methodology to be detailed by bidders C. Civil Engineering Works – Removal of Waste
SMB has provided waste estimates needed Zoning concept has been defined and sent to the Swiss Radiation Protection authority (OFSP) OFSP has accepted our proposal of the zoning concept An in-situ measurement and sampling campaign has already been launched to validate the proposed zoning layout as agreed with OFSP The RP requirement based on the zoning concept will now be included in the Invitation to Tender Dosimetry for radiation workers Control measurements on the work-site Waste conditioning requirements R. Froeschl Status Update - RP Assessment – EDMS 21/07/2017

East Area Renovation – Preliminary design for primary dump T9/T10/T10
Primary protons need to be dumped after hitting target T9/T10 Secondary beams are derived at an angle Primary protons need to be dumped after production target Dump has two functions Dump primary protons Provide passage for secondaries 3rd MCB 2nd MCB 1st MCB Targets Q74 T11 T10 T9 Primary dump Maarten van Dijk M. van Dijk, East Area Renovation – Preliminary design for primary dump T9/T10/T10

East Area Renovation - Beam line layout
Initial layout Dump front view Initial layout 3m high, 3.20m wide Varying thickness of iron Vacuum tubes T9/T10/T11 Ø159mm Primary beam dumped directly below T9/T10 T11 T10 T9 Primary beam height = 1260 mm Angle = 0° 784 mm 609 mm Damien Brethoux 20cm 100cm 240cm Maarten van Dijk J.Bernhard, East Area Renovation - Beam line layout

East Area Renovation – Preliminary design for primary dump T9/T10/T10
Adapted design – v3 Horizontal slice – beam T10 Pushed T11/QFO2 about 36cm upstream to allow more iron Iron thickness: T cm T9 / T cm Corner at T11 has most significant problems Will be blocked by a magnet Need to check what impact would be XZ – beam at T10 Maarten van Dijk M. van Dijk, East Area Renovation – Preliminary design for primary dump T9/T10/T10

Primary beam dump for T9/T10/T11
Several iterations of design for primary beam dump for T9/T10/T11 Improvement over initial design Preliminary adapted design Made of standard sized iron blocks Holes for secondary beam now 80mm Ø Holes for primaries T9 / T10 beam are 10cm Ø, length: 20cm air, 20cm Al, 50cm W Significant punchthrough at corner of T11 Need to assess impact Will iterate design further with input from RP (Robert Froeschl) Include magnet T11/QFO2 Maarten van Dijk M. van Dijk, East Area Renovation – Preliminary design for primary dump T9/T10/T10
