1 “The Conduct of Fellowship” 1 John 2:3-27 10/26/2008 Dr. Dane Boyles

2 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The Character of Our Conduct (2:3-11). Obedience. 3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. (1 John 2:3)

3 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
4 The man who says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did. (1 John 2:4-6)

4 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
Knowledge of God is proved by our obedience to His commandments. Assurance of our relationship to God is proved by our obedience to His Word.

5 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
Love. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. (1 John 2:8)

6 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The Old Commandment. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. (1 John 2:7)

7 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. (Deut 6:5) 18 “ ‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. (Lev. 19:18)

8 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The New Commandment. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. (1 John 2:7-8)

9 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. (John 13:34) 13 Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)

10 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The commandment should be exemplified in our lives. 9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. 10 Whoever loves his brother lives in the light, and there is nothing in him to make him stumble. (1 John 2:9-10)

11 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
11 But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness; he does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded him. (1 John 2:11)

12 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The Commandment for Our Conduct. In light of our spiritual condition (2:12-14). 12 I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name. (1 John 2:12)

13 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
13 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I write to you, dear children, because you have known the Father. (1 John 2:13)

14 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
14 I write to you, fathers, because you have known him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:14)

15 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
In light of the world’s allurements (2:15-17). Love not the world. 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15)

16 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The world’s characteristics. 16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world. (2 John 2:16)

17 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The world’s prospect. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. (1 John 2:17)

18 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
The Creed for Our Conduct: “We Know the Truth” (2:18-27) Antichrists will come. 18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour. (1 John 2:18)

19 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. (1 John 2:19)

20 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. (2 Timothy 4:3)

21 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. (2 Timothy 4:4)

22 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
About the anointing of the Holy Spirit (2:20-21). About those who deny Christ (2:22-23). 22 Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist—he denies the Father and the Son.

23 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
23 No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also. (1 John 2:22-23)

24 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
About eternal life (2:24-25). 24 See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is what he promised us—even eternal life. (1 John 2:24-25)

25 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
About false teachers. (2:26-27) 26 I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. (1 John 2:26)

26 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
27 As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him. (1 John 2:27)

27 “The Conduct of Fellowship”
Conclusion True fellowship has two important conditions: Conformity to a standard (Jesus Christ) Confession of sin. The character of our conduct involves (1) obedience and (2) love:
