Robber Baron or Captain of Industry?

In Economics, a monopoly (from Greek monos , alone or single + polein , to sell) exists when a specific individual or enterprise has sufficient control over a particular product or service to determine significantly the terms on which other individuals shall have access to it

James J Hill Biography: James J. Hill was born on September 16, 1838 in Ontario Canada. He was involved in a bow and arrow accident as a child and was blind in his right eye. He only went to school for 9 years, but he was very talented in English and Math. At the age of 19 he moved Minnesota and worked as a bookkeeper until he started to work for himself, transporting products on the Mississippi River. Eventually, he bought out other steamboat companies to create a monopoly. In 1873 he began to invest in railroads and bought up and expanded the Northern Pacific Railway. In 1893, he completed the Great Northern Railroad, stretching from Minnesota to Seattle. His net worth in 1900 was $56 million, equal to $2.5 billon in today’s dollars. Hill and his wife, Mary had ten children. Hill died in 1916, passing control of the railroad empire to his son Louis. NOTICE a lot of writing and too many words

Promoted settlement in the Northwest and paid for immigrants to come to the U.S. Brought industry to the Northwest by building factories along his rail lines Built the first transcontinental railroad that did not use government money Helped reduce panic and introduce reform during the Panic of 1893 Donated money to build numerous schools and libraries Donated money to Catholic charities Bullied towns into selling him their best land cheaply by threatening to bypass them with his rail lines Monopolized Northwest railroads, running many smaller companies out of business Co-founded the Northern Securities Company which was sued and dissolved by the federal government in 1904 under the Sherman Antitrust Act
