1 Assessment - Year 2 Children’s performance in Year 2 is assessed by the teacher. Tests are used to inform the teacher’s judgement Overall judgement made on the basis of a set of ‘Interim Assessment Criteria’ in Reading, Writing, Maths and Science Child should meet all criteria to have reached ‘expected’ standard The compulsory tests are as follows: a) Maths – 2 papers: arithmetic and reasoning b) Reading – 2 papers, different levels There are two optional papers for writing a) Spelling b) Grammar We will use these to inform our judgement All year 2 children sit the same papers

2 Writing assessment Interim assessment criteria include a range of requirements, including: Accurate spelling of common exception words Accurate use of grammatical constructs such as –ed for past tense, and –ing for present tense Use of ‘expanded noun phrases’ (adjectives) Accurate use of suffixes such as ‘ment’, ‘ful’ etc. Use of conjunctions to extend sentences Accurate use of contractions, e.g. couldn’t Neat, well-formed handwriting (only required for ‘greater depth’ judgement

3 Based on Yr 2 common exception words and spelling rules
e.g. past tense endings, words with -le sound 15 minutes – 20 questions – not strictly timed hurried petal

4 Questions based on Yr 2 expectations for grammar, spelling and punctuation
e.g. putting verbs into the past tense, selecting a suitable prefix for a word (need to know grammatical terms) Range of question types: multiple choice, missing words, matching boxes 20 minutes – 20ish questions – not strictly timed

5 Easier test with page of words
followed by questions. Fiction and non fiction sections Some multiple choice, some word matching, some answering questions.

6 Harder test with separate
reading booklet Fiction and non fiction Children expected to do both tests.

7 25 questions to be answered in around 20 minutes.
Start easy and get harder Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions

8 Around 30 questions to be answered in around 40 minutes.
Start easy and get harder. Begin with 5 verbal questions read by teacher. Reasoning questions – using mathematical skills to answer ‘real life’ problems, questions on shape, graphs, measures etc. All children do both papers
