3 Lesson 10 Minerals, Rocks, and the Rock Cycle
Minerals – An inorganic solid that occurs naturally and has a definite chemical composition and structure. Rocks – Naturally occurring solid material made up of one or more minerals. Before we move on with rocks and the rock cycle we need to answer a question about the minerals that make them up. How can you tell the hardness of a mineral? And the answer is……………………

4 Minerals, Rocks, and the Rock Cycle
Mohs Scale This scale ranks the hardness of minerals from 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest (talc) and 10 being the hardest (diamond).

5 Minerals, Rocks and the Rock Cycle
There are 3 types of rock! 1. Igneous 2. Sedimentary 3. Metamorphic Let’s look at these 3!!

6 Rock that forms when melted rock cools and solidifies
IGNEOUS Rock Rock that forms when melted rock cools and solidifies Ex: Granite & Basalt Some form from Magma-- melted rock below Earth’s surface Some form from Lava-- Melted rock (magma) that reaches Earth’s surface

7 Sedimentary rock ¾ of rocks on Earth’s surface
Rock formed from sediments (small pieces of broken rock) that have become compacted and cemented together Ex: limestone & sandstone

8 rock formed from other rock by high heat and pressure inside Earth
Metamorphic rock rock formed from other rock by high heat and pressure inside Earth Ex: marble & slate

9 How many types of rock are there? What is
magma? Use the above picture to answer the questions.

10 Complete the following graphic organizer by placing the following terms in the correct order: magma, igneous rock, metamorphic rock, sedimentary rock, sediment magma metamorphic rock igneous rock sedimentary rock sediment

11 Let’s Review the Rock Cycle!
