7.5.2 Proportions Word Problems

For popcorn?! One weekend you go to the movies with your friend. She pays for the movie tickets and you pay for the popcorn. You spend $9 for two bags of popcorn. The next weekend you guys do the same thing but your mom makes you bring your little sister along. This time you spend $14.25 for three bags of popcorn. Are these prices proportional? If not, what would the price have to be on the second weekend for the prices to be proportional? First weekend: ? Second weekend: $9.00 = $ boxes 3 boxes

Here’s the Math… $9.00 ÷ 2 = $4.50 for each box of popcorn $14.25 ÷ 3 = $4.75 for each box of popcorn …the popcorn prices for each weekend is NOT proportional. They increased the price on you…

Dad, are you speeding? There’s a party in Syracuse that your family kind of has to go to, but none of you really want to go. It’s 120 miles away and takes FOREVER to get there. Okay, it takes your dad 2 hours to drive you all there, but it feels like forever. The next month, there is a big circus 175 miles away and your whole family is excited to go. Your dad drives again and this time you arrive at your destination in 2 and a half hours. Was your dad driving faster for this second trip? If so, how much faster was he driving?

Here’s the Math… 120 ÷ 2 = 60 miles per hour 175÷ 2.5 = 70 miles per hour …yeah, your dad was definitely driving faster, 10 miles per hour faster…

Time to cook! This is a very simple cookie recipe that you want to triple to feed the whole middle school. Change the ingredient amounts to remain proportional as you increase the recipe size. 2 ¼ cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 ½ sticks of butter ¾ cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 12 ounces of chocolate chips

Here’s the Math… 2 ¼ cups flour x 3 = 6 ¾ cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda x 3 = 3 teaspoons baking soda 1 ½ sticks of butter x 3 = 4 ½ sticks of butter ¾ cup brown sugar x 3 = 2 ¼ cups brown sugar 2 eggs x 3 = 6 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla x 3 = 3 teaspoons vanilla 12 ounces of chocolate chips x 3 = 36 ounces of chocolate chips YUM!
