2. Purpose
Make members aware of housing counseling assistance available through Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

3. Military Housing/Rental Property
If member lives in government quarters, they must arrange a time for housing staff to conduct a pre-inspection
If moving from rental property, notify landlord as soon as possible
Housing Office can assist with any landlord problems

4. 2003 Service Members Civil Relief Act
Protects members of the United States Military
Protects Reservists and members of the National Guard (when in active federal service)
Some protections extend for a limited time beyond active duty discharge or release but are tied to the discharge/release date.
Some protections extend to members’ dependents

5. SCRA National Guard members are entitled to SCRA protection when:
Called to state active duty under Title 32
If duty is because of federal emergency
Request for Active Duty is made by President or Secretary of Defense
Member is activated for longer than 30 days
Ex: Security of airports after 9-11

6. Termination of Residential Leases
SCRA allows members to break lease when:
Go onto active duty if the lease was entered into before going onto active duty
Receive PCS orders
Receive orders to deploy for a period no less than 90 days

7. To break lease, Service member must:
Make request in writing
Include copy of orders

8. Involuntary Separations
Service members involuntarily separated are authorized continued use of military family housing for up to 180 days after separation

Provides a listing of state resources and variety of program offices for assistance

10. FHA and VA
After World War II, Federal Housing Administration mortgage insurance combined with Veteran’s Administration mortgage to help Veterans achieve the American Dream
