4 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
Definitions Reliability The ability of an apparatus, machine, or system to consistently perform its intended or required function or mission, on demand and without degradation or failure. Availability Characteristic of a resource that is committable, operable, or usable upon demand to perform its designated or required function. It is the aggregate of the resource's accessibility, reliability, maintainability, serviceability, and securability. Reliability of the Safety System Primary focus on risk reduction related to Personnel Safety. Dangerous failures vs. false shutdowns. PSS Reliability – 4 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

5 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
Reliability Assessment Tools - Calculators Continued improvement and development of existing tools and methods Data Collection Historical data “Fresh” data since end of 12 GeV upgrade Incorrect downtime assignment Methodology of calculation Perceived reliability of the Safety System PSS – phantom trips, unexpected / inconsistent behaviors… BCM – higher than normal trip rate, diagnostic problems… ODH – increase of trip rates in the spring/summer, communication problems… PSS Reliability – 5 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

6 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
PSS System Challenges 20+ years old hardware (PLCs, switches, network etc..) 20+ years of software and hardware modifications and development Contains over 3000 I/O points Independent systems for each segment with redundant configuration Lack of scheduled and available maintenance time Solutions PLC upgrade process – started, planned for next couple of years Continued Maintenance effort (door switches, maglocks, lights, limit switches etc..) Reduction of system complexity at hardware and software level Internal “cleanup” of software Cooperation with OPS to improve PSS interface and documentation PSS Reliability – 6 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

7 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
BCM System Challenges Mid ‘90s hardware Lack of diagnostics (only local) No connection to Epics Highly sensitive to Supply Voltage levels Solutions Add diagnostic feedback to Epics Install diagnostic BLMs around the BCM cavities Regain detailed knowledge of components Improve testing techniques of spare components PSS Reliability – 7 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

8 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
ODH System Challenges 20+ years old hardware Around 100 sensing heads in the field Short life span of the sensors Sensitive to environmental changes Solutions Upgrade hardware – conceptual plan ready Infrastructure changes – networking New sensing technology – Hall D / Tagger uses new type of the sensors Scheduled maintenance – trimming sensors, replacing sensors Improved diagnostics for OPS PSS Reliability – 8 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

9 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
Path to Improvement Resources – Staffing and Funding We are requesting approval for hiring additional positions Hardware upgrades require funding and allocated installation time Preventive / Predictive Maintenance – Calendar / Schedule Dedicated, sufficient time for maintenance activities Data and experience driven Preventive / Predictive Maintenance Well planned prioritized schedule PSS Reliability – 9 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

10 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
Path to Improvement Training Continued training and cross training for SSG members. New members of SSG group are maturing in the specific experience and knowledge of the systems. We’d like to propose migration of the SSO Training and Testing documents to MOODLE: Consistent framework Improved learning and testing process Complete coverage of topics Knowledge Base Part of the training efforts to share knowledge to help with troubleshooting, diagnostics, training, preventing maintenance, etc.. PSS Reliability – 10 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

11 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
Path to Improvement System Improvements / Upgrades Replacement of aging equipment Upgrades implemented in timely fashion Simplification of the systems without compromise of their function “Cleanup” of the hardware and software developed over 20+ years Documentation PSS Reliability – 11 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal

12 PSS Plans for improved Reliability and Availability
Q & A PSS Reliability – 12 2016 Ops StayTreat Jerry Kowal
