1. Annotated Bibliography – WHY?
PURPOSE: To examine sources related to your topic, learn something from them, and evaluate their use in designing your museum.

2. Your annotated bibliography needs to have the following for each source.
Bibliographic notation at top – then….
You should briefly address these issues in each annotation:
A summary of the source: what kind of information does it contain?
How does the source contributed to your understanding of the three project goals (Knowledge, Meaning & Application)?
Evaluate the strengths or weaknesses of the source. Comment on what bias the source may have.

3. Another Example of an annotated bibliography
The following is an annotation of a local teacher’s history blog. The particular blog entry is about memorial museums. Think about: What are the strengths and weaknesses of this TYPE of source? How might a blog help you? What are its limitations? The following annotation connects the source to the learning goals of the project and describes its content, and evaluates its strengths and weaknesses

This source comes from a blog by a local history teacher. The purpose of the blog in general is to expose teenagers to the idea that history can be exciting and applicable to our lives today, not just a list of dates and dead people. This particular entry in the blog records Ms. Greenberg’s thoughts on the memorial museums she has visited. She describes the somber and emotional experience she had visiting the US Holocaust Museum in Washington DC and Dachau concentration camp in Germany. She also describes with much excitement her experience visiting the Bob Marley memorial museum in Kingston, Jamaica and the Biggie Smalls memorial mural in Brooklyn, New York. She then reflects on what makes a meaningful memorial that builds knowledge, makes meaning, and helps people apply the lessons of history.
Ms. Greenberg is not a museum curator, nor is she a museum designer, and is basically writing about her own personal experiences. She is not an expert and has also chosen a somewhat corny and unprofessional name for her blog. However, she teaches history every day and is obviously quite invested in helping students learn lessons from the past. This source will give our group personalized insight into what people find meaningful in a memorial museums, and her descriptions will help give us ideas about possible ways to design our museum.
