1 The Battle of Gallipoli WW1

2 The Battle of Gallipoli is a sea and land war, between Ottoman Empire (Turks) and the Triple Entente. It was an unsuccessful attempt by the Triple Entente to control the sea route from Europe to Russia.

3 Battle of Gallipoli: February 19th, 1915 - January 9th, 1916

4 Why Turks blocked out dardanelles strait from enemy ships (Triple Entente) when the war started The Triple Entente could link up supply routes with Russia Kick Ottoman Empire out of war Capture Constantinople (Capital of Ottoman Empire) The warfare in Belgium and France had minimal progress Dilute German Army as they supported the depleting Ottoman Army Bill’s part.

Winston Churchill: Was the first Lord of Admiralty In 1915, resigned from his role due to the unsuccessful result in the Gallipoli Got demoted to an obscure cabinet post

8 Churchill’s Plan Definitions:
Allied troops- Britain, France, Australia, New Zealand. Stalemate- A position counting as a draw, in which a player is not in check, but cannot move except into check. -Churchill’s plan was sending battleships of the British and French Navies to smash through the Turkey decrepit, along the narrow Dardanelles. - Once they took over, they would send 480,000 allied troops to land on Gallipoli and keep the strait open. - During the invasion, the Turks had enough time to recruit forces of the British and French, along with the ANZACS

Charles Monroe Was responsible for overseeing the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula Replaced Sir Ian Hamilton as regional Commander- in- Chief General Ian Hamilton A commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force Tasked to seize control of the Dardanelles straits along with the capture of Constantinople

10 Failed Naval Attack February 19th 1915, 10 battleships were sent, mine sweepers failed to detect the mines March 18th 1915, ships entered the straits, undetected mines underwater and forts attacked the ships 3 sunk and 2 damaged Remaining ships retreated

11 Amphibious Beach Attack
On April 25th 1915, under General Ian Hamilton command, the ANZAC and French troops, suffered heavy casualties to land on the Gaba Tepe, later known as Anzac Cove.

12 Back Attack The summer heat and dysentery epidemic were unbearable
A lot of the soldiers died from disease and from ineffective leadership In August, Hamilton ordered 63,000 troops to link up with the Anzacs at Anzac Cove Indecision gave the Ottoman time to reinforce their army On Aug 10th, the Ottoman recaptured Suvla bay

13 Results Hamilton later got replaced by Charles Monro, who recommended evacuation The campaign finally decided to evacuate in December. All troops retreated by January 9th Casualties British: 205,000 French: 47,000 Turks: 300,000

14 Random Fun Facts In 1915 August, 800 British soldiers vanished and reappeared again a few years later dead. Rosemary instead of poppy flower is worn on ANZAC day (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) The ANZACs were all volunteers. I dont think there is a town named ecubeat? 15 Random Fun Facts The Gallipoli Peninsula is very near the famous ancient city of Troy. In 1810 the British romantic poet Byron swam the Dardanelles to emulate the feat of the ancient Greek hero, Leander.
