3 The Schlieffen Plan This was Germany’s secret plan to quickly defeat France Attack France 1st with everything while Russia was not ready After beating France go after Russia Prevents Germany from fighting a two front war Germany invaded Belgium and attacked France

4 1st Battle Of the Marne Occurred a month into the war at the Marne river 30 miles outside of Paris. German forces met a combined French & British army. The Germans tried to encircle Paris, but spread their men too thin. This allowed the Allies to punch through the German lines & win.

5 Results of the Marne Stopped the German advance (Schlieffen Plan)
No quick victory Over ½ a million troops died

6 Battle of the Somme The Ultimate Trench Warfare battle on the Western Front. The battle lasted 5 months The Allies won a total of 6 miles of territory Over a million troops died during the fight

7 Battle of Tannenberg Occurred on the Eastern Front between Germany & Russia. The Germans surrounded and destroyed the Russian Army. This battle stopped the Russian invasion of Germany. Russia lost 140,000 men Only 10,000 escaped Germany lost only 20,000

8 Battle of Jutland This was the only major naval battle of the war
Occurred in the North Sea Was considered a draw The 2 largest navies in the world belonged to Germany & England Germany lost 11 ships England lost 15 ships Germany never returned to the seas

9 Battle of Gallipoli This series of battles occurred near the Dardanelle Straits in Turkey. (Ottoman Empire) The Allies were trying to open a third front Wanted to pull some Central Powers armies out of Russia It was a combined Naval & Land battle One of the only in the war

10 Results of Gallipoli The Allies were beaten back by the Turkish forces. British & Australian casualties were about 210,000 France lost 50,000 Turkey lost 250,000. No 3rd Front to help out the Russian Army
