1. Payroll FAQ

2. When do I get paid? Pay day is the last working day of the month.
The holiday season such as Thanksgiving and Christmas will allow for early checks. This exception pay day will be announced prior to the holiday.

3. When will I receive my first paycheck?
If you are transferring here in a 190 day position and will receive a final pay in August from a prior system, you will receive your first check in Sumter County September 30th.
If you are from another state or a first year employee, you annual salary will be divided by 13 months to receive you first check August 31st.

4. When will I receive my last check for the school year?
If you work through the last date of your contract, the chart below will show the last pay.
10 month employees last pay – 8/31
11 month employee last pay – 7/31
12 month employee last pay – 6/30

5. Where do I pick up my check?
Checks may be picked up at the location where you work.
Direct deposit is available and your check stub may also be picked up at your school on pay day.
Checks will be mailed during summer break.
Please be sure to keep updated address information with the payroll department.

6. When will my benefits begin?
If your first check is July 31st, your benefits will begin August 1st.
If you receive your first check August 31st, your benefits will begin September 1st.
If you receive your first check September 31st, your benefits will begin October 1st.

7. How is sick leave calculated?
You earn 1.25 days of sick leave each month worked. You will be given all your sick leave days at the beginning of the school year.
The leave balances on your check stub is always one month behind.
You may use up to 3 days per year of your sick leave as personal leave.
The following is a chart of the amount you will earn for your number of contract days.
10 months or days will earn 12.5 days per year
11 months or days will earn days per year
12 months or 240 days will earn 15 days per year PLUS 10 vacation days per year.
REMEMBER: If you resign from employment before your last scheduled date of work and you have used more sick leave than you have earned, your final check will be deduced for any days taken that have not been earned.
49% or part-time employees do not earn leave.

11. Personal and Professional Leave
Three (3) days of any accumulated sick leave may be utilized during each school year for personal or professional reasons provided prior approval of the absence is given by the Superintendent or authorized representative and provided the presence of the employee requesting absence is not essential for effective school operation.
Personal and professional leave will not be granted during in-service days or on the day before or day after holidays.
Emergency requests for personal and professional leave may be granted at the discretion of the Superintendent or his or her authorized representative.
Employees are not required to disclose the purpose for which such absence is sought but may be required to state whether the absence is for personal or professional reasons.

12. Jury and Witness Leave
Each person employed by the Sumter County School System shall be allowed leave with pay for the purposes of serving as a juror in any court or when subpoenaed to testify in a case arising out of the individual duties as a teacher.
Jury and/or witness leave shall not be deducted from an individuals accumulated personal, professional, or sick leave.
No teacher utilizing jury leave shall be required to pay the cost of employing a substitute teacher to serve during his or her absence for jury or witness leave.
