4 I. OBSERVING Look at the picture. Could you infer anything about the man in the picture?

5 You can probably infer or guess all of the following:
His age The type of job he has Where he is now Where he is going

6 There are some clues that help you guess the answers to these questions
All of these clues encourage you to make inferences about the man in the picture

7 II. READING In reading, the evidence for your inference consists solely of words

8 An inference is a process of reaching a conclusion about something from known facts and evidence

9 In other words, inferences are the conclusions a reader draws about the unsaid based on what is actually said

10 Reading Tips: 1. Make sure your inferences rely mainly on the author’s words rather than your own feelings or experience

11 Reading Tips: 2. Check to see if you can actually identify the statements that led you to your conclusion

12 Reading Tips: 3. Check to see if your inference is contradicted by any statements in the paragraph. If it is, it is not an appropriate or useful inference
