2 Authority Part 1 Quick Review

3 Quick Review What is an authority?
1. Legal power, or a right to command or to act; as the authority of a prince over subjects, and of parents over children. Power; rule; sway. 2. The power derived from opinion, respect or esteem; influence of character or office; credit; as the authority of age or example, which is submitted to or respected, in some measure, as a law, or rule of action. 3. Testimony; witness; or the person who testifies; as, the Gospels or the evangelists are our authorities for the miracles of Christ. 4. Weight of testimony; credibility; as a historian of no authority

4 Quick Review 5. Weight of character; respectability; dignity; as a magistrate of great authority in the city. 6. Warrant; order; permission. (By what authority dost thou these things. Matthew 21:23. Acts 9:14.) 7. Precedents, decisions of a court, official declarations, respectable opinions and says, also the books that contain them, are call authorities, as they influence the opinions of others; and in law, the decisions of supreme courts have a binding force upon inferior courts, and are called authorities. 8. Government; the persons or the body exercising power or command; as the local authorities of the states.

5 Quick Review II. Two characteristics of authority
A. Power: (an authority exercises its power in various ways) 1. Deter—to show opposition to 2. Dissuade—to turn away from by persuasion 3. Detain—to deprive of freedom; take into confinement 4. Discipline—to train or punish 5. Destroy—to do away with, cause the destruction B. Protection: (an authority is a source of protection)

11 Examples of Authority 3. Pastors Hebrews 13:17, Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

12 Examples of Authority 4. Police and Security Officers
5. Military Leaders 6 Courts and their rulings 7. Government Officials

13 Examples of Authority Romans 13: 1-8,
[1] Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. [2] Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. [3] For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: [4] For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. [5] Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. [6] For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. [7] Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. [8] Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

15 Examples of Authority [12] And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, [13] Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. [14] And if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. [15] So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. Mathew 28: 12-15

16 Examples of Authority 8. Media Mathew 28:11-17,
[15] So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day. But at least Fox News can be trusted To be fair and balanced!

But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

Examples of Authority What is the one Authority that many overlook? God (The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit) God’s Word-The Bible

20 —Galileo Galilei (Jesuit Priest)
Famous Quotes: It vexes me when they would constrain science by the authority of the Scriptures, and yet do not consider themselves bound to answer reason and experiment. —Galileo Galilei (Jesuit Priest)

21 Examples of Authority We must obey God and His Word! John 5: 23-27,
[23] That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him. [24] Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. [25] Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live. [26] For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; [27] And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

22 Examples of Authority We must obey God and His Word!
2 Timothy 3:14-17, [14] But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; [15] And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. [16] All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: [17] That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

23 Famous Quotes: No man is to be credited for his mere authority's sake, unless he can show Scripture for the maintenance of his opinion.—John Wycliffe

24 Examples of Authority 12. Self Judges 17:6,
In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Proverbs 12:15, The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise. Proverbs 21: 2, Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. Deuteronomy 12:8, Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.

25 Principles of Obedience
Authority Part 2 Principles of Obedience

26 Principles of Obedience
A. Obedience is better than sacrifice or worship. 1 Samuel 15: 22, And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. Proverbs 21: 3, To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice.

27 Principles of Obedience
B. Obedience is a sign of love John 14:15, If ye love me, keep my commandments.

28 Principles of Obedience
C. Obey every authority unless directed by a higher authority. A practical application of this principle is when a child is growing up they may adopt the views of his parents. Yet when he is older he may develop his own views that may differ from what he was taught. He has placed another authority as being higher than that of his parents even if it is his own authority. Likewise a church member may believe a certain thing to be true because his pastor or teacher told them it was true. They may find out later that it is not by reading scripture or further teaching from another source and change their views. 1. A well loved and trusted authority may not always tell the truth. 2. Sometimes the truth is harder to believe than a lie. 3. A lie from a well loved and trusted source is hard to defeat. (This only applies to human authority; not to God since He cannot lie.)

29 Principles of Obedience
D. Obey God rather than man Acts 5: 29, Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. 1. If it is man trust and verify Acts 17:11, These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 2. If it is God trust and obey

30 Principles of Obedience
Trust and Obey—Words: John H. Sammis, 1887. “This song gives a simple, clear explanation of living the Christian life. The title expression was used in a testimony meeting, following an evangelistic crusade in Brockton, Massachusetts, by Dwight L. Moody. A young man stood to speak, and it soon became clear he knew little Christian doctrine. But he finished by saying, “I’m not quite sure—but I’m going to trust, and I’m going to obey.” Daniel Towner, who was in the meeting, jotted down the words, and gave them to John Sammis, who developed the lyrics from them.”—source:

31 Principles of Obedience
When we walk with the Lord In the light of His Word, What a glory He sheds on our way; While we do His good will, He abides with us still, And with all who will trust and obey. Not a shadow can rise, Not a cloud in the skies, But His smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt or a fear, Not a sigh or a tear, Can abide while we trust and obey. Not a burden we bear, Not a sorrow we share, But our toil He doth richly repay; Not a grief or a loss, Not a frown or a cross, But is blest if we trust and obey.

32 Principles of Obedience
But we never can prove The delights of His love, Until all on the altar we lay; For the favor He shows, And the joy He bestows, Are for them who will trust and obey. Then in fellowship sweet We will sit at His feet, Or we’ll walk by His side in the way; What He says we will do; Where He sends, we will go, Never fear, only trust and obey. Trust and obey, For there’s no other way To be happy in Jesus, But to trust and obey.

33 Conclusion: The Final Authority
A. Let God Be True and every man a liar. Romans 3: 4, God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. B. All other authorities will be put down by God in the end I Corinthians 15:24, Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. C. No matter what man believes, says or does; we need to obey God.

34 Conclusion: The Final Authority
Mathew 28: 17-20, [17] And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. [18] And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. [19] Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: [20] Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
