2 Spot Advice Friend Emergency Always follow the SAFE Code
Spot the Dangers Look for dangers whenever you’re near water Advice Take Advice Read the signs Ask lifeguards and adults Go with a Friend Always go with friends or family, it’s more fun, and they can help in an emergency. Never Swim Alone Friend Before starting the activity, take this opportunity for the class to practice remembering the SAFE Code. In this activity pupils will practice completing the first point of the SAFE Code, ‘Spot the Dangers’. Emergency Learn what to do in an Emergency Call 999 and shout for help Never go into the water to help someone

3 At the Pool Know the Signs Know the Depths
Never get into water without knowing its depth. Weaker swimmers should only swim in water no deeper than their thigh. KNOW THE POOL DEPTHS Measure someone with a metre ruler!! When playing with friends, we would recommend that Weaker swimmers only go up to Thigh depth Stronger swimmers go up to chest depth Buoyancy Aids for weaker swimmers Never dive into shallow water Do not run on poolside as you can slip and fall Never push someone else in

4 At the Beach When at the beach know the meaning of the flags. Generally these flags will be flying at a beach attended by lifeguards. If in doubt, never enter the water and seek advice.

5 At the Beach Always position yourself close to the lifeguard station when on the beach and entering the water. Inflatables are fun but always ensure someone is with you holding onto the inflatable by the attached rope to ensure you do not drift LIFEGUARDS Familiarise yourself where the lifeguards are on the beach Swim only where the lifeguards can see you INFLATABLES Use of inflatables can be very dangerous in the sea. If you going to use them, always: Make sure you have an adult with you who can remain with feet touching the ground Never Paddle or row out too deep CURRENTS OR TIDES Look out for warning signs of high tides or strong currents. DO NOT USE inflatables with a strong current LOOK OUT FOR ANY OTHER WARNING SIGNS WHEN AT THE BEACH Always follow the advice of signs. Strong currents are a real danger. Where you see a break in the tide, do not enter the water as this is a rip current and is very strong and could pull you out to sea.

6 What to do in an Emergency?
IF SOMEONE NEEDS HELP.... Throw in a Buoyancy Try to Get Attention Shout / Get Help If you can, call 999 IF YOU NEED HELP... SHOUT for Help Float on Your Back, Raise 1 Arm Hold onto a buoyancy aid / anything that floats NEVER GET INTO WATER TO SAFE SOMEONE ELSE

7 Be Safe in Water At Home Even at home there are dangers when in and around water. Never get into a pond or alike to retrieve a ball or for any reason. Weeds at the bottom could restrict your exit and cause you harm. Paddling pools are great fun, but always ensure an adult is with you to observe and ensure your safety. Younger children should always have someone with them when in the bath. Older children may prefer to bath alone, but always tell someone that you are. Always empty the bath water before exiting in case you slip and fall. Even when having fun at home, or in someone else’s home, always remember the dangers of water. When playing in home pools or paddling pools, the same rules about knowing the depths, jumping, diving etc will apply. Always no your limits and do not take risks. Around Ponds/lakes.... Never enter the water. There may be water plants at the bottom you could become entangled in. Dangers are not always obvious. Even at bathtime, like with any water activity, please make sure an adult is with you and stays with you at all times. Empty the bath as soon as you finish.
