3 Assessment pass back: “Two sources that show different views about the storming of the Winter Palace in October 1917” Strengths Making inferences from the sources Judging the purpose of both of the sources Improvements Judging the reliability of the sources! A lot of students stated that the historian would be less reliable because he was writing 60 years after the events of the October Revolution! While this is true, it is generally assumed that historians of modern history (1500-present) have weighed multiple pieces of evidence to reach their conclusion! This would make a historian’s work less biased and therefore more reliable! Using more of your own knowledge about the situation in Russia during October 1917

4 Determining Bias in Sources: Steps to follow
1) Briefly summarize the information in the source, including names, events, and dates 2) Who produced the source? Who did they produce the source for? Why did they produce the source? 3) Was the producer present at the events described? How does he know about the events? 4) Was the source produced at the time of the events described? Or later? If later, how much later? Make sure to consider who is producing the source! If it is an historian writing about modern history than this doesn’t matter quite as much! 5) Do you think the producer was neutral about the events he described? Or was he influenced by outside factors when creating the source? Support your answer with details from the text and your own knowledge of the historical period. 6) Was the producer trying to persuade his audience? Or was he simply reporting the facts? What specific words in the source let you know? 7) What is your overall assessment of this source? Is it trustworthy and/or biased? Why do you think that?
