Long time ago… there were no “tools” used to see nature – people could only rely on their eyes.
Until…
1600s Anton Van Leeuwenhoek created a simple microscope.

3. From Simple to Complex…
Also in the late 1600s, Robert Hooke built a complex microscope (2 lenses – like ours!)

4. He decided to look at a piece of cork…
Hooke thought the boxes he saw looked like the rooms or “cells” monks live in.
That’s where the word “cell” came from!

5. What did people think? Plants are made of cells (like the cork).
Are animals?
Spontaneous generation – maggots come from nowhere!

6. Thanks to the microscope, thoughts changed!
1838 – Matthias Schleiden – plants are made of cells.
1839 – Theodor Schwann – animals are made of cells.
1855 – Virchow – all cells come from other cells.

7. Cell Theory Cells are the basic unit of life.
All organisms have one or more cells.
All cells come from preexisting cells.
