C. Fernández Bedoya May 22nd 2012 CMS Upgrade Week

2 OFCu-RO rear transition modules
System made of various elements. Prototypes produced for all of them, rest coming really soon: - OFCU-RO modules 2 types of backplanes (J2_OFCU, TIMBUS_OFCU) - 1 slow control board (VME_patch) - TSC_rear modules (for the TSC-ROS link) -Being tested at lab at present. Results good so far. Minicrate+CuOF mezz + CERN fiber + OFCU-RO + ROS 9U VME crate OFCU-RO C. F. Bedoya May 22nd, 2012 2

I recommend you to measure the voltage at MONB and MONP resistors (the last one, you have to enable the fotodiode in the laser driver). If I configure the CuOF with Torino´s recommended values: Bias=0d50 (aprox 3.75 mA on vcsel) and modcurrent =0d20 (1.56mA on vcsel) the optical power I get from the 8 channels is (last number is the voltage I measure in MONB): ch1= dBm   ---  129 mV ch2=-11.43        mV ch3=-8.63      mV I need to put bias=160 to get -3 dBm ch4=   mV ch5=-11.69    ch6=-8.95  ----  mV ch7=-6.83  mV ch8=-9.90   mV Part of the difference between channels (but only part) in my opinion is due to the fact that the LC fiber goes deeper in some vcsels than in others (with an LC cage I think it should work better). If I configure with bias=0d80 (6 mA) and mod=0d80 (6.24 mA) I get ch1=-5.94 dBm ch2=-5.79 ch3=-6.06 ch4=-4.66 ch5=-6.95 ch6=-5.82 ch7=-3.69 ch8= The reproducibility is not too bad, usually within 0.5 dBm. Closed loop??? 2 channels MONP value oscillations C. F. Bedoya May 22nd, 2012 18

19 Drift Tubes Phase 1 Upgrade Plan
When I left it running during the night with the first 3 channels and Torino´s values, the first two channels unlocked, while the 3rd was ok. I swapped the fibers and the next time, it was again the channels corresponding to the first ones in the CuOF that unlocked. I really think those values are too low. I cannot get the receiver working for Ibias<0d23 (it depends on the channels, some times it until bias <0d17) th Ibias =0d80 I get 208.9mV in MONB (first channel) with bias=0d160 I get mV in first channel. 22 Fibers Length of the fibers is critical: Latency Skew in trigger links
* 96-fibers cable with MTP-12 connectors choosen * 4 samples purchased to Draka through CERN-TS-EL-OF * Evaluated, good performance (length tolerance, mechanical dimensions and optical properties) * No constrains from installation point of view Length of the fibers is critical: Latency Skew in trigger links Compact and precise system (mm) developed to measure fibers length on reception Sample fibers have: 52 cm max difference between trunks 20 cm max between ribbons 10 cm max between fibers inside one ribbon C. F. Bedoya May 22nd, 2012 22

23 Fibers * Space available for routing the fibers is tight but existing (cable chains the major concern) * Laying down the fibers may not need wheels opened * Central cabling team of 4-5 people required for 3 days each wheel (estimate from Mimmo Dattola) - Order fibers by mid June 2012 - Test and qualification by end of 2012 - Ready for installation by Beginning 2013 Plan C. F. Bedoya May 22nd, 2012 23

24 USC racks ROS crates TSC crates DT-DSS C. F. Bedoya May 22nd, 2012 24

25 SC relocation: Installation and commissioning
Plan is to advance fibers installation and USC part (crates, fibers, etc) as much as possible (not linked to detector maintenance tasks or TRBs) -Start installing one wheel (YB-1) late spring 2013 Intervention requires LV recabling and LVDS cables rearrangement If commissioning is satisfactory, we can move to rest of the wheels in a staggered way, as soon as they are free from other interventions Readjust synchronization is an important item Work should be completed and tested by end of 2013. Don´t expect major interferences and major concern is availability of central services. Eventually, will need global running to check for latency adjustment and proper synchronization between subdetectors C. F. Bedoya May 22nd, 2012 25

26 Schedule Concerns * Major worry: Tight schedule. Efforts have been done in reducing the time requirements, still time is tight for everyone * DT upgrade projects also have a very tight schedule with no contingency… doing our best to accomplish it * There is one year of data taking and several Magnet cycles before LS1 (#maintenance tasks can only get worst) * Other worries: - Interleaving/harmonizing HO and DT-RPC interventions Availability of crane and lifting platforms (drivers, training..) - Availability of critical manpower (in DT) for MC repairs and testing - Central services availability - MC thermal cycles (central shifts?) * SC relocation will be decoupled from TRB installation to insure proper commissioning of the new TRBs. * This implies that the period where we need full availability of central services is long (power, cooling (aluminum and copper circuit), gas, DAQ and DCS (vme pcs, databases, PVSS, etc)) estimate from April 2013 to December 2013 * If DAQ plans are as they appear (i.e. Minidaq available in 2013) would be a great benefit. * We are planning on vmepc and DCS PC replacement asap as LS1 start (CAEN PCI express being evaluated) (Global run afterwards?) 28 INCREASED POWERING GRANULARITY TO MINIMIZE IMPACT OF FAILURES
Optimization of SC power distribution in UX racks to increase granularity in case of LV supply failures requires rearranging cables from MC • 2 persons from central cabling teams needed for 2 days each rack • Final crate cabling done by DT personnel INCREASED POWERING GRANULARITY TO MINIMIZE IMPACT OF FAILURES A3100 to be converted to A3050 C. 29 Fibers status -CERN´s fibers look promising according to specifications and price (Draka. OM3, 50/125 um ) -We have ordered four 96-channels fibers and they should arrive by March 12th -We will evaluate the length tolerance, mechanical dimensions and optical properties -Installation and testing details will need to be discussed, since their price is very high -From the manufacturer: **The standard trunkcable tolerance is defined by CERN as -0/+1%. This means the minimum length of the individual MPO-connections is 60,0m and the maximum is 60,6m. ** It will however be possible for the individual MPO-connections within one trunkcable to accept a tolerance of -0/+20cm. ** Meaning, we can have a trunkcable with individual MPO-connections between 60,1 and 60,3m and another trunkcable with individual MPO-connections between of 60,4m and 60,6m. If this is OK for your customer, then this acceptable. Multi-mode: MTP®/MPO APC Male & Female Push Pull Locking (beige) Supplier: US Connec C. F. Bedoya February 28th, 2012 29
