3 Objective This presentation will discuss how and when Physical Education made it’s way into the U.S. Educational Curriculum. I will also be discussing how the motives behind Physical Education have changed over the course of time.

4 Early beginnings 1823-Round Hill School located in North Hampton Massachusetts became the first U.S. school to make P.E. a part of their education program. Primary focus-gymnastics, hygiene, and overall care of the human body

5 P.E. did not become a formal requirement until after the civil war
1866-California becomes first state to pass a law requiring exercise in public schools Physical Education was still free lance at this point Children were allowed to participate in games of their choice

6 Modernization of P.E. Korean war proves Americans are not as physically fit as they should be 1966- Presidential Fitness Test is put into effect to assess fitness levels of the nations youth.

7 Purpose of Presidential Fitness Program
Designed to encourage and prepare Americas youth for military services Program included: jumping, throwing, shuttle run, pull-ups, etc

8 Physical Education faces setbacks
Many Physical Education programs were dropped from institutions As commitment to P.E. declined additional subjects and electives began taking its place.

9 A new found importance Lately a focus on Physical Education has been renewed due to a national concern regarding the rise of obesity among our nations youth. The percentage of U.S. children with diabetes has more than tripled since the 1970’s.
