1 Probability Vocabulary
Universe-- everything! All of the elements in all sets and everything surrounding them. Both circles and everything else surrounding them!

2 Subset-- some pieces, but not all. Part of the universe.
This subset shows only C This subset shows only A

3 This subset shows P ∩ Q ∩ R
Intersection-- elements that are common to two (or more) subsets. Also called “and.” This subset shows P ∩ Q

4 Probability Vocabulary
This subset shows A ∪ C Union-- the set of elements in subsets A or B or BOTH. Also called “or.” This subset shows A ∪ B Written as the symbol    ∪

5 Written as the symbols ~A or A’
Complement-- the set of elements outside of a given subset. Also called “not.” Written as the symbols   ~A  or A’ This subset shows ~A

6 Empty Set-- a set that has no elements-- nothing in common among sets
Empty Set-- a set that has no elements-- nothing in common among sets. Also known as “mutually exclusive.” Written as the symbol:

7 Tile Venn Diagram match!
Cut out the tiles. Match each example of set notation with its corresponding Venn diagram. Check your answers with a partner before taping them into your notes!!
