2 Early life. Emigrated to Australia in 1884 took a ten week voyage to Sydney. Born in 5th may

3 ADVENTURE Before Douglas went to Antarctica he went to New Hebrides (Vanuatu now) In April 1903 he left Sydney on Ship Ysabel under the command of Captain Earnest Rason.

4 EDUCATION 1805 enrolled in Fort Street Model Public School – finished school early Douglas Mawson’s Headmaster J.W. Turner is to have said things like “If there be a corner of this planet of ours left unexplored, Douglas Mawson will be the organiser & leader of an expedition to unveil its secrets” William and Douglas Both won arts scholarships to university. William wanted to study Medicine & Douglas Mining Engineering. Their Mum encouraged them to follow their dreams. Mum Funded University by turning her home into a boarding house. March 1899 (age 16) enrolled in University Of Sydney – Met T.W. Edgeworth David who was a professor of Geology at the University of Sydney from 1891 to 1924. He inspired Douglas to change his career direction to Geology.

5 More EDUCATION 1902 applied for job as junior Chemistry demonstrator to help pay for second degree this time in geology. Got the job. But on the condition he was allowed 6 months leave in April 1903 to join expedition to new Hebrides. 1902 completed mining engineering degree.

6 Life achievements & impact on Australia
Claimed 42% of Antarctica for Australia. First ascent of mount Erebus. First team to reach the south magnetic pole. Turned out to be a a key Antarctic explorer and expedition leader during the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Set up scientific bases on Macquarie island, cape Denison (Mawsons Hut now), Queen Mary Land. Used a radio in Antarctica for the first time. Explored km of Antarctic coastline collecting info on geology, magnetism, biology, meteorology & oceanography. The impact Douglas had on Australia was huge. Because he claimed a large percent of land on Antarctica for Australia

Claimed 42% of Antarctica for Australia. Was knighted in 1914 Over ten important things were named after Douglas Mawson including Mawson station in Antarctica.

8 Occupation. Geologist, Antarctic explorer also had a diploma in mining engineering.

9 Family Robert Ellis Mawson
was Douglas Mawsons father , Robert went to new guinea intending to make a fortune around the time when his son’s finished school. Unfortunately he didn’t make a fortune. Robert’s father died when he was six. Robert was an accountant with a Sydney timber merchant. Robert had a moustache in 1892 Douglas Mawson had a brother called William William was two years older than Douglas. William finished school in the same year as Douglas even though Douglas was two years younger. Douglas was interested in his studies & he was smart.

10 Family Mother – Margrett Ann funded university for both sons. Had Curly Hair. Wife - Paquita Delprat. Married in holy trinity church of England, balaclava, Victoria. On 31st March 1914 Had two children – Patricia and Jessica, Patricia was the eldest.
