1 Finalizing Award Recommendations
Key Themes, Score Summary Worksheet, and Award Recommendation Form Refresher

2 Wrap-Up Meeting Revisit agenda and ground rules from consensus
Do we have insightful OFIs for each item? Don’t forget about key themes Score Summary Worksheet Update item scoring range, not actual score Select final scoring band for applicant Award Recommendation Form Summary of Sites Visited

3 Award Recommendation Score Summary Key Themes The award recommendation should be based on the applicant’s scores and key themes, which in turn are based on item comments Item comments are the building blocks. We extract our key themes from the item comments and score each item based on its comments. We then summarize item scores in the score summary worksheet. So the key themes and score summary worksheet should “match”. These 2 pieces of information then guide the award rec.

4 Key Themes

5 Key Theme Overview Executive summary of feedback report for applicant’s senior leaders Strategic in nature Summarize the most vital issues for the organization as a whole – e.g., what must organization do to become/remain competitive & ensure long term sustainability? Team Leader (TL) or designated team member uses consensus comments to draft initial list of key theme ideas What are key themes? Why are they important?

6 Finalizing Key Themes Begin with the list you developed at consensus
Do these still work? Do they appropriately reflect the applicant’s maturity? Do they tell the applicant what critical few things it must do to move to the next level? Are they traceable to the item comments? Are they still true? Is there anything to add or remove? TL or Scorebook Editor (SE) writes feedback-ready key themes based on team’s list

11 Using the Score Summary Worksheet
Capture your item score at Consensus in the first column Look at the changes you made to your item comments Consider whether the scoring range would have changed If you would have changed the score WITHIN the range, do nothing If you would move to another range, indicate which one Do not update the score in the system

18 Scoring Band Descriptors
Does the final scoring band descriptor reflect the applicant’s maturity? Does it agree with the key themes? Are the scores stratified over all of the items? Are the item scores supported by the item comments? Review the Room Scoring Summary and see if the scoring band descriptor is a good fit Good sanity check = review the scoring band descriptors to see if your item scores support your key themes and award rec

19 Award Recommendation

20 It’s very important to support your recommendation with examples from the applicant organization.

21 Drafting the Recommendation
An applicant may be awarded at the level it applied… Or any level BELOW Team reaches agreement on recommended level Recognition Level grid Key Themes Scoring Bands Team captures bullets for award form and signs TL or SE writes feedback-ready recommendation

22 TNCPE Recognition Levels
TNCPE Application Writing Workshop TNCPE Recognition Levels Level 4 Level 3 Level 2 Principles Continue to improve and build upon outstanding results and excellent systems Commitment and practice Beginning to commit and implement Processes Exhibit processes that serve as role models for others, with some at or near “best-in-class.” Demonstrate significant progress in building systematic processes Put in place some key process improvements Effectively Address Multiple requirements Overall requirements Basic requirements Results Demonstrate management excellence with superior results over time, directly attributable to a systematic well-deployed improvement approach. Results for some key processes show improvement that is directly attributable to a systematic approach. Process improvements are directly attributable to a fact-based improvement process. Results may or may not be evident; however, a measurement system should be in place. Practices Outstanding examples of high-performance organizations Many practices from which other organizations can learn and grow. Review each level of recognition.

23 Level 1 organizations are . . .
. . . interested in adopting and applying performance improvement principles

24 Level 2 Award Recommendation
ABC is in the early stages of developing systematic approaches to the basic requirements of the process categories, as evidenced by: listening to customers through XX system; conduct of an annual Strategic Planning retreat; recruiting and hiring of new employees; emergency preparedness and prevention planning; and the existence of processes that promote ethical standards of conduct. While there are multiple processes in place, many are not fully deployed and/or lack the means to establish cycles of learning that could lead to continuous improvements for the organization. ABC collects large amounts of data but is still in the early stages of determining how to effectively analyze this data for use in strategic planning. Segmentation of data and important comparison results that would allow the organization to benchmark itself against competitors in a rapidly changing healthcare environment are missing. Sample award recs that the judges liked
