What is the European Federation of Geologists (EFG)?
The voice of the European geoscientists.
Non-governmental, professional Organisation
Established 1980, based in Brussels / Belgium
24 National Associations representing 25 countries as members
Main aims are to contribute to a safer and more sustainable use of the natural environment, to protect and inform the public and to promote a more responsible exploitation of natural resources.
The guidelines to achieve these aims are the promotion of excellence in the application of geology and the creation of public awareness of the importance of geoscience for the society.

EFG‘s Vision
In line with the overall European policy for a sustainable economy based on environment, economy and society, the vision of EFG on the activities of the professional geologist should take in consideration the environmental responsibility, commercial responsibility and contribution to public safety and education. To follow these standards we support and organize training for geologists in seminars and workshops.

Newest members Turkey and Bulgaria. Requirements to become a member organisation of the EFG includes the formal application, translation and submission of the national regulations, acknowledgement of EFG‘s regulations and codes and payment of the fees.

According to the EU Single Market regulated profession database, below the genetic name of the profession ‘geologists’ there are 10 countries in Europe in which the profession of Geology is regulated: Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Greece, Italy, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

With this aim at the end of the eighties, EFG adopted a system of multilateral recognition between affiliated geological associations.
The European Geologist title is a professional title which recognises the ability to deliver a high quality of services within the practice of geology.
The professional title provides a quality mark to demonstrate to clients, regulators and the general public that the individual is competent to provide geological advice, and allows employers to offer competitive commercial services

Recognized university degree or equivalent qualification;

A committee established jointly by four professional organizations in Europe (GSL, IGI, IOM3 and EFG).
Now registered as a not-for-profit association with an address in Brussels (at the EFG office).
Members are all volunteers, no paid staff.

EFG / PERC - Competent Persons Requirements:
Membership in a RPO (EFG, IoM3, GSL, IGI or other recognised professional organisation) that:
requires compliance with professional and ethical standards
has disciplinary powers, including the power to expel a member
Min. 5 years relevant experience;
The principle of self-certification;
The principle of peer review.
Various government bodies responsible for the licensing and regulation of mineral exploration and development have setup a system of Recognized Overseas Professional Organizations (ROPO, RPO) in order to identify Qualified Person or Competent Persons.
The mineral sector is one of the main employers for geologists and the recognition of the professional competence, integrity and ethics are very advanced in this area. The recognition of EurGeol title holders as Competent Persons able to sign off reports has been extended.

PERC is a member of CRIRSCO.
CRIRSCO (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards) is an international ‘umbrella’ committee which coordinates the work of national reporting organisations that define public reporting standards.

Just a classification not a reporting standard. Probably more to define a national inventory the a mineable reserve as it includes undiscovered, non- and subeconomic materials (potential). Acceptance of the Competent Person concept

And still learning from the older colleague.

My Experience:
Learning from older colleaguges is good, but
Different people, different company traditions, different resource codes and different country regulations may lead to a Babylonian confusion and possibly wrong results.
Using organisations like EFG & PERC combines personal learning with generally accepted rules.
Eg the old German code with A, B C resources

All CPs, working under CRIRSCO, do speak a similar language,

Share the same responsibility.
The Zhairem project in Kazakhstan with Kazakh, German, English, Austalian and Russian experts following JORC. Castallanos projects in Cuba with companies from Canada, Germany, Italy and Cuba and experts from Cuban, UK, Italy, Germany, Argentina

Choosing the right standard – advantage of using PERC in Europe
PERC is recognized by ESMA for use on European Union stock exchanges (ESMA = European Securities and Markets Authority).
Accepted on a number of other stock exchanges around the world (e.g. Canada, Singapore, Australia).
Assistance and training available near-by and in the same time zone
The EuroGeologist with relevant experience is a world-wide accepted Competent Person.
The European standrad is PERC, depending on participating companies, other standards have to be considered too.

Advantage of Working under Code:
All CRIRSCO-aligned standards follow the same principles and share an identical set of core definitions.
Differences because different jurisdictions, different markets.
Specifies how and by whom public reports should be prepared.
PERC standard require all publicly declared resources to have reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction (i.e. NO “pie in the sky” – NOT an inventory of all mineralization regardless of economics)
Short and medium term planning should use resources and reserves reported under CRIRSCO standards as a solid and reliable basis
