Car made of paper, cardboard, wood Passenger is represented by an egg CO2 Powered car hooked to track line Analyze results and fix car for retest Actual cars that are driven by public Passenger is represented by a “dummy” Combustible fuel powered car on controlled track Analyze results and report to public and auto makers

3 TEAM WORK IS KEY 2 Areas of Design
The Crumple/Crush Zone & Aerodynamics Design a car that is fast with low drag Well constructed systems engine, wheels, compartment, etc… Devise a way to have your car absorb impact Use what ever material/design you want. The Passenger (EGG) Restraint & Cockpit Design a seating system Harness/seatbelt to hold egg in place Harness can not crack or bust egg Consider the best way to keep the egg “comfortable” for a long ride…yet safe for a BIG impact

Specific jobs 2 person groups Restraint systems Designer, along ergonomics for egg seat. Crumple Zone Designer, with aerodynamics design.

Responsible for Occupants being held safe and secure during and after the crash Ergonomics of cockpit Entry & Exit of car Visibility out of windows Special considerations Remember that the egg is to be considered a person…the egg itself is a body (excluding the arms and legs)

6 Crumple Zone Designer w/ aerodynamics design.
Responsible for Modeling the car to insure that the design will adequately protect occupants against forces and energy transfer Overall design of car Must have realistic look Yet have safety in mind And incorporate all the design factors into 1

7 ASSESSMENT Portfolio documenting and describing the design
Drawings - Investigations Research Report Realistic component of car Body Chasis “Suspension” Justification to the class Survival of occupants Exploded egg = fatal crash Cracked egg = injury No Blemish = little/no injury Class Participation

Materials chosen and rejected (analysis) Test results (mgh) for each trial Reasons for failure: observations, causes/effects Methods of optimization and results Final optimized solution: drawings/description.
