1 AFP Consortium Update May 2010

2 AFP Consortium Purpose
The purpose of the AFP Consortium is to develop, define and promote the AFP architecture. It's goals are to: Develop AFP as the best-of-breed presentation architecture for monochrome and color production variable-data printing Ensure seamless interoperability of AFP products from the various AFPC members Provide for compatibility between AFP environments and other presentation environments such as web/view. Short history of the consotium, why was it founded, what is the purpose and the goal of the incoporation.

5 Officers The Board of Directors appointed the following AFPC Officers.
President - Harry Lewis (InfoPrint Solutions) Secretary - Harry Lewis (InfoPrint Solutions) Treasurer - Paul Gerelle (MPI Tech) And even more

6 Architecture Architects
Main architects from InfoPrint Solutions Company. Reinhard Hohensee: Overall AFP; MO:DCA, PTOCA, GOCA Harry Lewis: phasing into Reinhard's work  Dave Stone: IPDS, BCOCA, FOCA Dennis Carney: phasing into Dave's IPDS work    Nenad Rijavec: IOCA Roger Buis: AFP Line Data Tim Towns (replaced Jean Aschenbrenner): CMOCA

7 Focus Areas Maintaining the Architecture New Conformance Level (IS/3)
Metadata Archiving My view of the main focus areas Will be covered in the next slides

8 Additions and Changes Multipage containers Image Resolution Triplet
Clarification to specification of TIFF and JPEG supported Editorial changes for various bar codes New proposals for work Specification of ”mixing rules” Specification of Printer Setup settings New Architecture Manuals to be published on AFPC website Maintainance of the Architecture Show a few upcoming features to show that the architecture is evolving.

9 New Conformance Level (IS/3)
Remember the goal of AFPC Ensure seamless interoperability of AFP products from the various AFPC members Interoperability is the key word. This is the reason to make a new level.

10 New Conformance Level (IS/3)
Subset of the AFP-MO:DCA and IPDS Architecture Foreward-looking level, therefore does not include Obsolete or Retired functions Non-strategic functions not widely implemented Interoperability is the key issue Product A A few words on what the concept is and why we are doing it. Talk about joining products from multiple vendors and how this is the customers guarantee that the whole line of products will work togetter. Referer til Kims snak om multivendor problematik. Product B

11 Metadata Metadata or Data about Data
Description of the data to which it refers Characterics of the data Workflow information Data Management information Keywords for search Date/timestamp of creation Copyright information Objecttype information (JPEG, Bar Code, etc.) A short description of what the term METADATA refers to. No details just a list of some of the possible uses of metadata.

12 Metadata (Now) AFP NOOP and TLE Non AFP RDF Dublin Core XMP IEEE-ISTO
EXIF All sorts of non standard information A lot of customers are already storing metadata information in their AFP streams using NOOPs or TLEs.

13 Metadata in AFP - Future
Definition of a new Metadata - OCA Structured Metadata Support for (some) existing metadata formats A few words of about the benefits of a structured metadata instead of proprietary metadata. Again interoperability is a key issue.

14 Archiving For an archive strategy to be legally sound, it must ensure that the presentation of the archived data, when retrieved, is identical to the presentation before archiving. Such a strategy mandates that the data is archived in its native format. If the data is generated in AFP format to be printed/viewed/distributed, it needs to be archived in the same AFP format.

15 Archiving To ensure an AFP Archive file can be presented in the future
All resources must be inline No device depended functions like Default font Default color AFP Archive will be based on the new conformance level with additions of Metadata AFP Archive will be an ISO Certified format Emphasize the ISO certification!

16 Future meeting schedule
October 2010 in Boulder February 2011 virtual meeting April 2011 to be announced October 2011 to be announced MPI Tech to host AFPC meeting in Denmark
