2 Pentecost: Christ’s Invading Power through His Holy Spirit Acts 2:1-12
32 God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. 33 Exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. Acts 2:32-33 (NIV84) 2 2

3 What is your life’s mission?
3

4 John 3:16–17 (NIV84) 16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him. 4

5 Acts 1:1-2 (NIV84) 1 In my former book, Theophilus, (the Gospel of Luke) I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day He was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen. 5

6 #2. Jesus Christ is the King of the kingdom of God.
Acts 1:3 (NIV84) 3 After His (Christ’s) suffering, He showed Himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. #1. Jesus Christ is alive. #2. Jesus Christ is the King of the kingdom of God. 6

7 Acts 1:4-5 (NIV84) 4 On one occasion, while He was eating with them, He gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift My Father promised, which you have heard Me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 1:6 (NIV84) 6 So when they met together, they asked Him, “Lord, are You at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7

8 Invite the Holy Spirit to help us understand what we read and hear from the Bible.
8

9 Acts 1:7-8 (NIV84) 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9

10 Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV84) 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 10

11 We now have power to be His witnesses.
Our objective: make more disciples. 11

12 Why is it important to us that Jesus Christ rules the universe from His throne in heaven right now?
Because we are able to face all the challenges life throws at us as conquerors! Because our future is secure and we need not fear death! Death does not remove us from sharing in His victorious Kingdom! 12

13 The Holy Spirit ministers in Christ’s “absence.”
Why is it important to us that Jesus Christ rules the universe from His throne in heaven right now? Because it is from His throne in heaven that Jesus and the Father send to us His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit ministers in Christ’s “absence.” 13

14 How did Jesus describe what the ministry of the Holy Spirit would look like when He came on the believers in Christ? John 14:15-17 (NIV84) 15 “If you love Me, you will obey what I command. 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. … 14

15 The Holy Spirit is “the Spirit of truth” and is “another Counselor.”
The Holy Spirit is qualified to “stand in for” Jesus. 15

16 How did Jesus describe what the ministry of the Holy Spirit would look like when He came on the believers in Christ? John 14:25-27 (NIV84) 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. 16

17 The Holy Spirit is a Teacher and a Reminder.
17

18 How did Jesus describe what the ministry of the Holy Spirit would look like when He came on the believers in Christ? John 14:28-31 (NIV84) 28 “You heard Me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe. 30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on Me, 31 but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what My Father has commanded Me. …. 18

19 The Trinity is a community of love, of unity in purpose,
and of beautifully coordinated ministry to their creation. 19

20 When the Holy Spirit occupies our lives, Jesus Christ is present.
How did Jesus describe what the ministry of the Holy Spirit would look like when He came on the believers in Christ? John 14:28 (NIV84) 28 “You heard Me say, ‘I am going away and I am coming back to you.’ …. When the Holy Spirit occupies our lives, Jesus Christ is present. 20

21 The Holy Spirit has provided God’s people with …, the reality of, and the experience of “Christ within you.” David Bryant 21

22 Where the Spirit abides all of Jesus abides.
The Spirit dwelling in us is equivalent to Christ Himself living among us. David Bryant Where the Spirit abides all of Jesus abides. David Bryant 22

23 How did Jesus describe what the ministry of the Holy Spirit would look like when He came on the believers in Christ? John 15:26-27 (NIV84) 26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, He will testify about Me. 27 And you also must testify, for you have been with Me from the beginning. 23

24 How did Jesus describe what the ministry of the Holy Spirit would look like when He came on the believers in Christ? John 16:5-8 (NIV84) 5 “Now I am going to Him who sent Me, …. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: …. 24

25 How did Jesus describe what the ministry of the Holy Spirit would look like when He came on the believers in Christ? John 16:12-15 (NIV84) 12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will bring glory to Me by taking from what is Mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is Mine and make it known to you. 25

26 The Holy Spirit’s ministry among us will have a cleansing effect.
He will guide us into all truth and bring glory to Christ. 26

27 The Holy Spirit “… activates the reign of Christ in the midst of the Church.”
David Bryant 27

28 The events on Pentecost
Three festivals associated with harvests. 1. Early Spring, barley harvest, Wave Offering or First Fruits; 2. Late Spring, wheat harvest, Feast of Weeks or Pentecost; 3. Fall or final harvest or Feast of Booths or Tabernacles. 28

29 The events on Pentecost
Christ’s resurrection as the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. The events on Pentecost Pentecost: The first evidence that wheat harvest is coming. 29

30 The events on Pentecost
Acts 2:1-4 (NIV84) 1 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. 30

31 The events on Pentecost
Acts 2:5-12 (NIV84) 5 Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6 When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. 7 Utterly amazed, they asked: “Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? 8 Then how is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? 9 Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?” 31

32 The events on Pentecost
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the 120 disciples gathered in Jerusalem (Acts 1:15) was going to change nearly everything about their lives. 32

33 The events on Pentecost
The message of reconciliation with God through His Son, Jesus Christ, was now ringing out with power and transformed lives. 33

34 The events on Pentecost
We have the gift of the Holy Spirit to give us the strength and boldness to let our light shine! 34
