4 Civilized SOCIETY Pg. 196 Step 1: Sort the following events as either civilized or uncivilized. The Ibo have strong religious beliefs The Ibo believe in family. (Okonkwo provides for his mother and siblings when his father dies) The Ibo celebrate a week of peace, and honor it in every man’s home The Ibo honor sports (wrestling) The Ibo tolerate domestic violence The Ibo admire hard work (Okonkwo starts off with nothing but gains admiration as a strong man who works hard to earn his respect) The Ibo sacrifice humans to appease the Oracle’s word from the gods (Ikemefuna) The Ibo honor their ancestors, sometimes with sacrifices The Ibo have a sense of community and celebrations Step 2: Add two events that you remember from your reading** The Ibo have a justice system within and with other tribes The Ibo have flexible matrimonial bonds (Ekwefi left her first husband for Okonkwo)

WHAT ARE WESTERN IDEAS? Western Ideas (also referred to as Westernization or Europeanization) are ideas that can be traced back to the thinking of Ancient Greece and Rome, with great philosophers and conquerors, which became a basis for European thinking. Western Ideas maintain certain cultural values, such as: -Education -A fair justice system -Peace over violence -Christian Religion/Concepts -Capitalism -Technological Advancement -Democracy -Advancements in Science -Modesty -Matrimonial Ethics (married to only one spouse, stay married and faithful to spouse) Written History QUESTION: Based on the evidence from your chart, What makes a culture civilized? Is your definition of civilized in question one, do you think you are using Western thinking? Why or Why not?
