4 By the end of Year 2... Partition 2-digit numbers into tens and ones. Add two 2-digit numbers within 100. Use estimation to check their answers. Mentally subtract a 2-digit number from a 2-digit number. Recognise the inverse relationships (+ -) Solve missing number problems Recall multiplication and division facts: 2, 5, 10 Identify 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 2/4, 3/4 Use different coins to make the same amount. Read scales in divisions of 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. Read the time on the clock to the nearest 15 minutes. Describe properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

6 Maths Mastery Depth not breadth. New Curriculum = New Thinking
An exciting opportunity to be involved in a new way of teaching. We will be starting to incorporate elements of the maths mastery programme into our lessons and using the ethos within our teaching. The mastery approach has been introduced this year in year 1 and EFS. Depth not breadth.

7 Maths Moments! Number bonds to 10 and 20
Children will have ‘learn its’. These are quick mental and oral starters focused around maths facts they need to learn. Number bonds to 10 and 20 Can you count in ? 2s, 5s, 10s Multiplications and Division facts 2, 5, 10 Doubling and Halving to 20

8 Support in class Keep up, not catch up!
Whole class learn together: same skill focus Scaffolding and resources to support individual needs. Deepening understanding - depth not breadth. Application of learning through reasoning and different contexts – Word problems, true or false, missing box. Practical – dienes, numicon, cubes Pictoral – drawn representations Abstract

9 It has become acceptable in society to be 'bad at maths'. Children are
exposed to these messages constantly, and we need to actively find ways to encourage a positive, growth mindset to maths. “In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment”. Carol Dweck

10 How to help at home Say the mathematical names for things. We use vocabulary such as 'calculations' and 'equations' in our maths learning. The children love to know what the 'proper' words are and what they mean. Many of our children can now use words such as these in their maths conversations. Practise ‘learn its’ at home. We have put together a few ideas of how to help your children with maths at home. Handouts with examples of how we do addition, subtraction, multiplication and division available.

11 Assessment - Very fluid assessment: we constantly assess children during lessons and we're scaffolding/extending children all of the time. - Children self-assess all of the time. They say when they find things easy/difficult and move through the different levels of scaffolding appropriately. End of unit assessments or skill practise: children have a go at different questions relating to skills covered so far. End of year assessment: teacher assessment 1 test on calculation and 1 test on reasoning.
