2 Target: Explain the causes, course, and consequences of the Persian Gulf War, 1990-1991.
Viewed as the 1st major crisis since the Cold War Cause: Saddam Hussein sent Iraqi troops to invade Kuwait (the world’s leading supplier of oil) Course: Turn away from America’s foreign policy under Regan UN adopts resolutions condemning the Iraqi invasion and imposing an economic blockade (find other sources of oil) Nov.1990, Bush doubles the size of American troops deployed in the Persian Gulf

3 Persian Gulf War cont. Consequences:
After one month of allied bombing, Iraqi troop morale suffered before the ground campaign Only 100 hrs. after the start of the ground campaign, the war ended The Persian Gulf War was the most popular war since WWII The war really restored American confidence as the worlds sole superpower The success of the war increased Bush’s foreign affairs approval rating and increased his popularity with voters

4 Target: Explain the impact that social and cultural issues had during the 1992 presidential election an during President Clinton’s first term. Clinton was a symbol of the baby boomers generation and appealed to the younger voter Clinton also appealed to women voters by campaigning with his wife Hilary “Two for the price of one.” Clinton strongly supported legislation favoring diversity and equality Bush's popularity was high after the Persian Gulf War, but the declining economy gave Clinton the opportunity to campaign government renewal and healthcare reform The campaigns run by each candidate were largely attacks on the character of the other candidates

After the election there was unrest with voters who thought, given Ross Perot's popularity and the first democratic win in 12 years, that politicians were out of touch with the public Perot only won 19% of the popular vote but received 0 electoral votes Women voter frustration stemmed from underrepresentation in government Supported Hilary Clinton's role in the presidential campaign Women were especially influential in upcoming elections with more women running for political office in 1992 1992 was then dubbed “the year of the woman”

In 1997 a bill was made that both the Republicans and Clinton compromised on: Reduced capital gain and estate taxes and gave taxpayers a credit of $500 per child and tax credits for college tuition. New individual retirement account (IRA) that allowed people to invest taxed income for retirement without having to pay taxes upon withdrawal. Raised the national minimum for cigarette taxes. Expanding federal student financial aid through Pell Grants, and lowering interest rates on student loans.
