Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Although labeled as the work of Stothard, drawing lacks the skill and control one would expect to find in a Stothard drawing. The companion piece illustrating the comedies derives many of its figures from engravings of Stothard's designs, however this does not appear to be true of the tragedies piece. The artist attribution was probably attached by the bookseller. Drawing is however in the fashion of Stothard and his followers. Notes (Hamnet) Date range based on style of drawing. Notes (Hamnet) Drawing is glued solidly to a backing, mounted with a similar watercolor illustrating characters from the comedies. In pencil on Folger copy, lower right corner of mount: "Famous characters from Shakespeare by T. Stothard R.A." Unsigned. Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Purchased as part of a collection of 122 watercolors of Shakespearean scenes, from a private owner by "Sabin" ca. 1898, and sold to the Folgers by Gabriel Wells, April 28, Most of the items in the collection were attributed to John Masey Wright. Title (Hamnet) Miss Shirreff as one of the witches in Macbeth [graphic] / [Augustus Toedteberg]. Date of Creation or Publ. (Hamnet) [late 19th cent.] Physical Description (Hamnet) 1 drawing : watercolor ; 7 1/2 x 5 1/8 in. Subject (Hamnet) Shakespeare, William, Characters -- Weird Sisters, depicted. Subject (Hamnet) Watercolors -- 19th century. Subject (Hamnet) Weird Sisters (Fictitious characters), depicted. Subject (Hamnet) Actors -- 19th century, depicted. Subject (Hamnet) Portraits -- Female -- 19th century. Associated Name (Hamnet) Lane, Richard James, , artist. Notes (Hamnet) All the works by Toedteberg that Folger owns are theatrical portraits copied after rare prints. They are either contained in volumes which were grangerized by Toedteberg or are individual items which were purchased from the sale of Toedteberg's collection. Some of the pieces are signed by him but most are unsigned. All of them, however, at one time passed through his hands and many may have been the work of his pen. They have been grouped together in this file for that reason. Notes (Hamnet) Artist: Portrait is copied by Toedteberg from a section of a lithograph by R.J. Lane. Notes (Hamnet) History: The lithograph from which this portrait is copied is entitled 'The Singing Witches' and was published in London by J. Mitchell, FSL has an original pencil sketch of the lithograph, by Lane (ART Vol. b8 no.251) and a copy of the print (ART Vol. d1 no.8). Notes (Hamnet) Provenance: Item was purchased by the Folgers from the sale of the Toedteberg Collection, pt. 3, held Oct. 6-7, 1904 by the Anderson Auction Co., item no in the catalog of the sale. Formerly cataloged as ART Box S558.7 no.1. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: The full print pictures Jane Shirreff, Priscilla Horton and Harriet D. Taylor in the roles of the three witches in Macbeth. This watercolor pictures only Shirreff. Notes (Hamnet) The art collection of the Folger Shakespeare Library includes many volumes of extra illustrated books, several of which formerly belonged to the library of the theatrical manager Augustin Daly. Many of these extra-illustrated volumes were inlaid and organized by Augustus Toedteberg, a professional inlayer and repairer of prints who resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. in the 1870's to 1890's. Notes (Hamnet) The known facts concerning Toedteberg are few. He was the grangerizer of the Daly copy of Joseph Norton Ireland's Records of the New York stage (a work extended by him from 2 to 33 volumes) and of Daly's souvenir books of his Shakespearean productions (many of which are now in the Folger collection). Toedteberg also published a work, in 1893, entitled Portraits of actors reproduced from rare originals for Augustus Toedteberg. The Folger Library has a few letters in its ms. collection addressed from Toedteberg to Augustin Daly concerning Toedteberg's grangerizing work. His theatrical collection, which consisted of numerous books, prints, drawings, autographs and playbills, was sold at auction by the Anderson Co., New York, Notes (Hamnet) The volumes which Toedteberg grangerized also contain a number of watercolor portraits, copied after rare prints, which are signed by a Victor Moblard who may have been under the employ of Toedteberg. Moblard's style of painting and writing is rather distinct and even where he has not signed his name it is easy to spot his work, In cases where his signature or initials appear, or where the style gives evidence of his work, the item has been entered under his name. In all cases, where known, a subject entry has been given for the original artist of the print from which Moblard was copying. No biographical information has been located on Moblard. The user is referred to records under Moblard, Victor, for additional works from the Toedteberg shop. Notes (Hamnet) This record contains unverifiable data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance. Notes (Hamnet) Title from pencil note on border of Folger copy. Half length portrait to front, looking right, vignette. Item is glued to a larger sheet of Whatman's paper, dated Unsigned. Notes (Hamnet) Toedteberg's collection of theatrical prints was extensive and it is assumed that he drew on this collection as a resource for his grangerizing endeavors. It appears that he was in the habit of copying, in ink or watercolor, rare prints, or having rare prints copied by others, perhaps when he was able to obtain only one copy of the original print. Notes (Hamnet) Subject: The first two items illustrate the same scene, the first being a rough pencil and wash study for the second which is a finished watercolor. The scene depicted is Macbeth and Banquo meeting the Weird Sisters on the heath (ART Box W951 no.154,155). The third item shows Lady Macbeth, holding a piece of paper in her right hand, standing in the arch of a doorway. Her left hand is formed into a fist and is held across her chest (ART Box W951 no.156). The fourth item pictures Macbeth holding the daggers and Lady Macbeth holding onto his shoulder. Notes (Hamnet) The first two items probably had penciled signatures at the bottom of the drawings however they have been clipped and only the tops of the letters are now visible. The fourth item has a penciled note in the lower left corner '1976' and underneath that 'WRIGHT'. The handwriting is not similar to any of the hands found on other works by Wright in the FSL collection and the number does not refer to the case number and could not possibly have been the date it was painted. The first two items measure approximately 5 3/4 x 9 in. The third measures 7 1/2 x 6 in. and the fourth 9 x 6 1/2 in. Call Number (Hamnet) ART Box W951 no.155 (size S)
