1 NGSS-TCT-Writing in Science
Lisa Cary 7th grade Science March 23rd, 2017

2 What we will cover: 1. Assessments in science-looking at the new assessment models. 2. Through Course Task (TCT)-what is this? 3. Talk about student work-science writing and student voice, Claim Evidence Reason (CER) 4. Sample TCT-work through 5. NGSS resources for TCT-bank of TCT 6. Choosing a TCT for your grade level

3 New 3 Part Science Assessment Model
Classroom Embedded Assessment Through Course Tasks State Summative Assessment evidence evidence evidence Kentucky Academic Standards for Science (KAS) The new Science Assessment System is focused on our new 3D standards. Hence, all curriculum and instruction decisions should be aligned to these standards. This presents the need for numerous shifts in instruction. The new assessment system places much emphasis on day to day assessment (just good instruction). The system consist of three different component, each having its own users, uses and purpose. Classroom embedded- day to day instruction that informs both student and teacher where learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how to get there. TCT- to talk more about in this session Summative – items initiated by teacher work groups, phenomenomially based or problem solving clusters consisting of 6 and 2, multi dimensional, supports Curriculum & Instruction

4 KAS for Science Curriculum
Classroom Embedded Assessment Through Course Tasks State Summative Assessment evidence evidence evidence Focus is using the 3 Dimensions to make sense of phenomena or solve problems KAS for Science All of the components focus on…. Handout #1- Science Assessment System Quick Fact Sheet supports Curriculum

5 Classroom Embedded Assessment Through Course Tasks
State Summative Assessment Ongoing process to provide opportunities for seeking and interpreting evidence of 3-dimensional science learning for use by learners and their teachers to decide where the learners are in their learning, where they need to go and how best to get there What are some examples of this? Thumbs up, quick write, quizzes, experiments, questioning techniques

6 Classroom Embedded Assessment Through Course Tasks
State Summative Assessment Provide a sampling of a school’s science program level of achievement (based on KAS Science) and identify percentage of students meeting expected levels of attainment particularly as they explain phenomena, use models, and solve problems using practices, core ideas, and crosscutting concepts This is in grades 4, 7, and 11. We just completed this assessment on March 13th.

7 Through Course Task (TCT)
The Through Course Task (TCT) Let’s dig in…wondering what a TCT is ? 1. Through-course tasks in the science assessment system handout-Jig-Saw sections for these handouts 2. Through Course Task facilitation guide-Jig-Saw each step, big paper to present to the whole group Groups to unpack facilitation guide: FAQ, 3 Step process 7

8 Characteristics of TCTs
TCTs are 3 dimensional tasks specifically designed to get evidence of student competency in 2 dimensions – practices (SEP-Science and Engineering Practices) and crosscutting concepts (CCC) – separate from PES-Performance Expectations/standards Tasks are to be used formatively – goal is for both student and teacher to understand strengths and improvement needs for the SEP and CCC evaluated 8

9 Characteristics of the TCT Process
Students learn through engagement with the task – the task is a sense-making experience Implementing TCTs is a collaborative process for teacher teams to calibrate and refine strategies and expectations for student performance 9

10 Planning for Task Facilitatio n
TCT Process: a collaborative process for calibrating and refining teaching and learning around rich tasks at every grade level. Planning for Task Facilitatio n Facilitat ing the Task Post Task Analysis Handout of process TCT Annotation for M&M First page is overview Turn to second page to find Planning… 1 2 3 10

11 Writing in Science Before you start the TCT you will want to go over tips for writing in science.
Handouts: 1. Supporting Scientific Reasoning and Voice 2. Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning

12 Planning for Task Facilitatio n
TCT Process: a collaborative process for calibrating and refining teaching and learning around rich tasks at every grade level. Planning for Task Facilitatio n Facilitating the Task Post Task Analysis Look at the 2nd page for how to set up and conduct the task. Actually go through the M&M TCT. 1 2 3 12

13 M & M TCT Facilitation Afterwards ask participants what might be some challenges implementing this with your students.

14 X TCT is a process…you don’t print it and give it.
Emphasize that TCT is a process… you don’t print it and give it NO STOP DROP AND TEST!

15 Planning for Task Facilitation
TCT Process: a collaborative process for calibrating and refining teaching and learning around rich tasks at every grade level. Planning for Task Facilitation Facilitating the Task Post Task Analysis Teachers collaborate to: Evaluate student work relative to the success criteria and define continuum within the team Refine instructional practices based on their shared experiences with the process Expand their understanding of instructional decisions 1 2 3 15

16 Student work samples Student work samples
Analysis of student responses based on Success Criteria for the M&M TCT.

17 Step 3: Student Work Analysis
Things teacher teams might do: Use a student work protocol to streamline evaluation process Share facilitation insights based on specific evidence Identify change to practice and a plan to incorporate into daily practice How would these suggest activities support teacher and student learning. Other suggestions for post task?

18 Look at the connections!
Framework for Teaching Domain 4 Professional Responsibility Framework for Teaching Domain 1 Planning Framework for Teaching Domain 3 Instruction Each step aligns with one of the Framework for Teaching domains PLC Team planning Data teams PLC? Data Teams? Grade group team planning? PGES? Others?

19 TCT Field Test – Teacher teams at each grade level are developing tasks that will be used in a field test this November – March All Kentucky teachers will be expected to use a task with their students – collaborative process Additional tasks will be added to bank. Expect TCT implementation 1-3 times per year at each grade K-HS. Save student work to be given to your Building Assessment Coordinator (BAC)

20 Where will I find the TCTs? SharePoint (for KY Teachers)
Task Task Annotation Supporting documents Student work samples Site updated as task are developed.

21 The TCT component of the science assessment system is…
Let’s review… The TCT component of the science assessment system is… a mechanism for teachers to collaboratively calibrate and refine their expectations for students and teaching strategies a collaborative process for teachers to learn together a formative process for teachers and students to identify learning needs

22 Access the TCT bank and identify possible tasks that would be appropriate for your grade level.

23 Thank you! Thank you to the following teachers for information used in this presentation Christine Duke, KDE Lora Griffin, SCPS Teresa Emmert, KDE
