27 Preparing Data for Community Maps
Data sources Data Prep Tools Output geodatabase

28 You know your data the best!
Why Data Prep Tools? You know your data the best! Reduce data interpretation errors & review cycles To make it faster and easier No need to change source data schema The tools and process are customizable Like doing your taxes… but much more fun

29 Data Prep Tools - Prerequisites
ArcGIS for Desktop version 10.1 or higher Data formats – Shapefile, file/personal geodatabase, ArcSDE geodatabase, CAD or Coverage Basic ArcMap & geoprocessing tools experience (basic SQL) Understanding of source data

30 General Workflow for Data Prep Tools
Download Make list of layers to contribute Run Me First Tool Open theme MXD Add your data to MXD Run tool & QA (*AllLayers.mxd) Repeat 4,5,6 for each theme Zip Final GDB and upload to CM app

31 Download from Contribution App – (http://communitymaps.arcgis.com)
Obtaining the Tools ArcGIS Online Geoprocessing Sample Download Download from Contribution App – (

32 What’s in the Download? Folders
Doc – READ ME document and CMDataPrepToolsGettingStarted video LayerFiles – Layer files in World Topo Design MXDs – Map Documents for each data theme Scratch – Template, scratch and final geodatabases Scripts – Python script used with the RoadCenterline tools ToolData – Sample data ArcGIS Toolboxes (tbx) – Run Me First & CM DataPrepTools v2

36 Run Me First Tool Must be run before any other tools
Creates empty template geodatabase with your spatial reference Adds your organization name for QA purposes Defines organization name and ISO codes for country and local language

38 Anatomy of Data Prep Tools
2 Most tools require a selection statement (SQL) 1 All tools require source data 3 Most tools require a field to label the features in your local language 4 Most tools require a label field for the English translation of your labels

39 Reviewing data prep with AllLayers.mxd
Map contains layers for all possible Data Prep Tools output Symbology similar to World Topo Map Compare migrated layers to each other Get an idea how your published layers will look in the World Topo Map
