Medical Definition: “a rare fatal progressive degenerative disease that affects motor neurons, usually begins in middle age, and is characterized especially by increasing and spreading muscular weakness” Symptoms of ALS Hard to walk Weakness in hands and legs Trouble talking Difficult to sit up straight At age 21 he was diagnosed Doctors said he only had two and a half years left He was in a wheel chair by 1969 He lost his voice in 1985

4 HOW HE BECAME FAMOUS Learned things really quickly about theoretical cosmology he knew more than his own college teacher Even with ALS he was able to accomplish a lot He made very important discoveries in theoretical cosmology He got awarded the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics which was held by Isaac Newton He wrote multiple books, one called “A Brief History of Time”

5 HIS Impact on others He applied Einstein's theory of gravity to the universe and came up with the big bang that supposedly created earth and everything around us He impacted science by figuring out how black holes work He had a theory that black hole would eventually vanish Stephen said if a black hole was as big as our sun that it would take longer than the age of our universe

6 Decisions/lessons Had the worst grades in 9th grade class then had average grades so when he wanted to got to oxford he did have a scholarship and he didn’t have enough money His first year in Oxford he had no friend so he joined the rowing team When he joined the rowing team it took away from his studying When diagnosed he saw a boy dying of leukemia and started to become more optimistic about life because he knew there was worse
