1 Expeditionary Learning: Module 4
Adolescent Brain Unit Expeditionary Learning: Module 4

2 Let’s Talk Logistics! We are beginning an Adolescent Brain Unit.
This unit consists of SEVERAL articles related to adolescent brain research and studies (This is in lieu of a novel). You will complete a Learning Log throughout this unit for each article. This will be turned in at the end. Due Date is TBA. Let’s now discuss the Learning Log! 

3

4 Number the article in the following way:

5 Jigsaw Activity You will number off 1-4.
The number you get is the numbered section you’ll read. We will first read independently, taking notes on the article. You will then get with your like-numbered groups and discuss the specifics of that section. There will be TWO groups of each number-assemble appropriately. In your groups, you will decide on a spokesperson to share 2-3 important details about this article. Everyone else will note these details on their paper/article while each group is sharing.

6 Quick Recap! Several Articles-14 to be exact (instead of novel)
Learning Log for each article. (We’ll spend some time in PRIDE Hour getting this set up.) Yesterday was Article #1: “Teens and Decision Making: What Brain Science Reveals” Today is Article #2: “The Teen Brain: It’s Just Not Grown Up Yet”

7 Thinking about the Reading
The main idea of this article is that knowing how the brain works was helpful to Dr. Jensen and her sons. How was it helpful to them? How do you think knowing something about how the adolescent brain works would be helpful to you? To your parents? To your school? Discuss these answers with your partner. Highlight the following terms from the article: pediatric neurologist, neuroscientists, frontal lobes, myelin or “white matter,” neural insulation, brain chemistry, cognitive deficits, and cognitive baseline. Write a note next to the word you highlighted, writing what you can infer the word means.

8 Check your answers! Pediatric neurologist: doctor who studies nervous system of children Neuroscientists: someone who studies the brain Frontal lobes: a region of the brain behind the forehead Myelin: material that coats the outside of nerve cells Neural insulation: another way of saying myelin Brain chemistry: the chemicals in the brain Cognitive deficits: lacking in ability to think or understand Cognitive baseline: having the standard ability to think or understand
