Several theories trying to explain the etiology of migraine The most accepted ones are the vascular and neurovascular theories

5 Neurovascular theory Cortical depression spreding (CDS)
- Reduction in brain electrical activity and decrease blood flow - Release of K+ and H+ activates sensory fibers - Activation of trigeminal & brain stem neurons - Precipitation of vasodilation

6 Genetic component Strong familial influence proved in twinstudies
Mutations in voltage gated calcium channels seen in many families, predisposing to migraine Related to serotonin release in midbrain

7 Migraine and neuropsychiatric disorders
Comorbid disorders, such as depression, anxiety, panic disorder and bipolar disorder. There are several researches and theories explaining the associations.
