Law of Inertia Force (F) = mass(m) x acceleration(a) For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction An unbalanced force must be exerted for a rocket to lift off from a lunch pad or for a craft in space to change speed or direction (First Law). The amount of thrust (force) produced by a rocket engine will be determined by the rate at which the mass of the rocket fuel burns and the speed of the gas escaping the rocket (Second Law). The reaction or motion of the rocket is equal to and in the opposite direction of the action, or thrust from the engine (Third Law).

4 Rocket Engines - characteristics
Thrust - How much thrust, or force, it produces. It is how hard the rocket engine pushes on the rocket by expelling its exhaust. Efficiency - How efficient it is. This is similar to gas mileage for a car. We measure the efficiency of a rocket engine by its Specific Impulse, which is a measure of how much thrust the engine produces for every pound (or kilogram) of rocket propellant it burns. It is calculated by dividing the thrust (in pounds of force) by the mass flow rate of the propellant (in pounds of mass per second.) Most rockets today operate with either solid or liquid propellants. The word propellant means both fuel and oxidizer. The fuel is the chemical the rocket burns, but for burning to take place, an oxidizer (oxygen) must be present. There is no oxygen in space so unlike jet engines which use oxygen in the air around them, rockets must carry the oxygen with them into space.

5 Staging a rocket Why do we do it?
To achieve the greater and greater velocities required to send a given mass farther out into space, higher thrust must be exerted or it must be applied for a longer period of time. The longer thrust is exerted, the faster a rocket will go. In staging, when a lower stage has exhausted its load of propellants, the entire stage drops away, making the upper stages more efficient in reaching higher altitudes. In the typical rocket, the stages are mounted on top of the other. The lowest stage is the largest and heaviest. In the Space Shuttle the stages attach side by side. The solid rocket boosters attach to the side of the external tank, along with the Shuttle orbiter.

7 Stability and Control Pitch – (y axis) is a measure of how high or low the nose cone is pointing. Yaw – (z axis) is a measure of how far to the left or the right the nose cone is pointing Roll – (x axis) is a measure of how much the rocket has rotated on its longest axis Center of mass (COM) is easy to demonstrate. It is the balance point of a rocket. Think of it like balancing a meter stick on an outstretched finger. If the stick rests horizontally, the COM is directly over your finger. If the COM is to the right of your finger, the stick will tip to the right. If to the left of your finger, the stick will tip to the left. An object, tossed into the air, rotates around its COM. Rockets also try to rotate around their COM while in flight. If this rotation is allowed to happen, the rocket becomes unstable. This is where center of pressure (COP) comes to the rescue. The Center of Pressure (COP) only exists when air is flowing past the moving rocket. COP is also a balance point. It is the balance point of the pressure exerted on the rocket surface by air molecules striking it as it flies through the air. The COP is between the COM and the end of the rocket. In flight, spinning or tumbling takes place around one or more of three axes; roll, pitch, and yaw. The point where all three of these axes intersect is the center of mass (COM). Stability around pitch and yaw are most important because they can cause the rocket to go off course. Roll will not affect flight path, in fact it can help stabilize it.
