3 w h a t i s c o n f l i c t ?? A problem faced by a character.
A STRUGGLE between OPPOSING characters or forces. There are EXTERNAL and INTERNAL conflicts. EXTERNAL: outside opposing force (another person for example) INTERNAL: opposing emotions within the mind (or heart) of the character Let’s take a look at the 6 types of conflict…

4 Character vs. Character (Man vs. Man)
External Conflict A struggle between one character and another Example: Batman vs Joker (Protagonist vs Antagonist)

5 Character vs. Nature (Man vs. Nature)
External Conflict A struggle between a character and something in nature… can be an animal (unless ALL characters are animals), or natural disaster like a hurricane. Example: Dorothy, in the Wizard of OZ, stuck in the tornado heading to OZ

6 Character vs. Society (Man vs. Society)
External Conflict A struggle between a character and a group of people Example: Court Case or Witch Burning…

7 Character vs Self (Man vs. Self)
Internal Conflict A struggle within the character’s mind Example: “Should I tell someone how I really feel?” Should I or Shouldn’t I?

8 Character vs. Supernatural
External Conflict Someone is in conflict with a ghost, alien or unexplainable thing

9 Character vs. Technology
When a person is in conflict with a robot, machine, etc. EX: Transformers

10 Let’s Practice # 1-5 on your paper
Write down whether each conflict is internal or external and write the NAME of the conflict down.

15 #5 You see a group of students picking on another student and wonder whether or not to stand up for the person being bullied.
