1 What is DNA?

2 DNA

3 DNA DNA stands for - Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid
Building blocks of DNA are nucleotides

4 There are 3 main parts to nucleotides
1. Nitrogenous Base 2. Deoxyribose Sugar 3. Phosphate Group

5 4 types of bases in DNA Guanine Adenine Cytosine Thymine
Nitrogenous Bases 4 types of bases in DNA Guanine Adenine Cytosine Thymine

6 Purines vs Pyrimidines
Purines are more complex and have an extra group on the nitrogenous base Examples of Purines are Adenine Guanine

7 Pyrimidines are simple and only have one group on their nitrogenous base
Examples of Pyrimidines Thymine Cytosine

8

9 Base Pairing Only specific bases pair together Adenine always pairs with Thymine Guanine always pairs with Cytosine AT or TA GC or CG

10

11 The backbone of the DNA is the Deoxyribose and Phosphate group
The middle of the DNA is the nitrogenous bases

12 Deoxyribose sugar and phosphate group
Nitrogenous Bases

13 The phosphate of one group binds to the deoxyribose sugar of the next group
The nitrogenous bases are held together by hydrogen bonds
