1 DMP GEO Label from self assessment to certification Joan Masó
Researcher at November 7th GEO-XIII Plenary St. Petersburg

2 The origins. The GeoViQua project. A bottom-up approach
A dynamic graphical representation of the metadata Based on four comprehensive studies with geospatial data users and experts For more information about the GEO label studies, visit

4 The Data Management Principles and GeoViQua GEOLabel facets: There is overlap.
Producer of the dataset, e.g., organisation or individual who produced the dataset, their contact information, etc. DMP-4: DATA DOCUMENTATION Lineage/provenance information, e.g., processing applied to data and number of process steps. DMP-5: DATA TRACEABILITY Informal comments about the dataset quality as provided by the dataset producer, e.g., any identified problems, suggested use, etc. Dataset’s compliance with international standards, e.g., compliance with ISO 19115, Dublin Core, etc. DMP-3: DATA ENCODING Quality measures of the dataset, e.g., uncertainty measures recorded in UncertML, errors, accuracy information, etc. DMP-6: DATA QUALITY-CONTROL  Feedback, comments and ratings provided by the users of the dataset, e.g., general comments on dataset quality, identified problems, suggested use for the dataset, etc. Domain experts’ comments on dataset quality, e.g., results of formal quality checks, expert suggestions on the dataset applications, etc. Citations where the dataset was used and cited, e.g., formal reports on dataset quality checks, journal articles, etc.

5 The new GEO Data Branding. A top down approach
The Data Management Principles (DMPs) were adopted by the XII GEO Plenary in Mexico city giving 10 principles that GEOSS providers are encouraged to follow to better conform to GEO requirements. In practice, a dataset that follows the DMPs is considered a good GEOSS dataset. Many of the DMPs can be tested by reading the metadata about them, other cannot directly but can be also tested by other means. The DMP Data branding and its application for the 10 criteria is an evolution of the GEOlabel concept. The principles are represented by 10 icons and classified in 5 categories identified by colors: Discovery, Accessibility, Usability, Preservation and Curation.

6 Individual icons to disseminate the DMP concept

7 A DMP Data Branding label
It has the 10 faces of the DMP Visualizing the conformity to the individual DMP criteria. A facet with color indicates conformity to the corresponding DMP. The label is dynamic by hovering or clicking

8 Levels of conformity to the DMPs
The GEO Data Branding conformity assessment is always voluntary and initiated by the data provider and never imposed by GEO. Level 1: Self-assessment & declaration: Data providers declare which of the principles they are complying with and make use of the label to communicate conformance in their outreach materials. “Declared compliant with GEO data management principles”. Level 2: Peer review and automated conformance testing: An automatic conformance test based on public criteria accesses both for metadata and data. GEOSS GCI may publish the results of the conformance testing and also link to reviews. “Reviewed/tested compliant with GEO data management principles”. Level 3: Certification: The provider agrees with the peer review and automated conformance testing results and requests certification. An independent certification entity undertakes an audit or quality control. GEOSS GCI may publish the results of the certification. “Certified compliant with GEO data management principles for ###”

11 Conclusions The GeoViQua GEO label facets has commonalities with the DMP. The icons and colors have been re-mastered to converge into the DMP criteria providing a visual image for them and helping disseminate them. The GEO label has become the DMP Data Branding Label. The levels of conformity to the DMP Data Branding Label need to be agreed and implemented (we have the first). As former coordinator of GeoViQua I’m very happy to see that, in the end, what we did can have a new live in the GEO Data Branding.

12 Thank you !
