Naming Compounds

How you name a compound depends on whether the compound is ionic or covalent.
An ionic compound is a combination of a metal and nonmetal. A covalent compound is a combination of a nonmetal with another nonmetal.

nonmetals metals ionic compound = metal and nonmetal.
covalent compound = nonmetal and nonmetal.

Covalent compounds are named with Greek prefixes.
Ionic compounds require a Roman numeral if the metal’s charge is unknown. Covalent compounds are named with Greek prefixes. Roman numeral Examples: CuS is called copper(II) sulfide N2O3 is called dinitrogen trioxide N2O3 is called dinitrogen trioxide Greek prefixes

compounds that require Greek prefixes
compounds that require Roman numerals

Ready? Here we go…... …naming compounds.

KI potassium iodide ide Binary compounds end in -ide.

CaCl2 calcium chloride ide Notice the ide ending?

Na2O +1 -2 sodium oxide The reason there’s two Na ions in the formula is because the sodium loses 1 electron to O, but O needs two electrons.

FeO This requires a Roman numeral ?
(which is the charge on the iron ion)

+2 -2 FeO

+2 FeO Answer: iron(II)oxide

Fe2O3 This requires a Roman numeral

-6 -2 Fe2O3

-6 +6 -2 Fe2O3

-6 +6 -2 +3 Fe2O3

Fe2O3 +3

Fe2O3 Answer: iron(III)oxide

FeO +2 iron(II)oxide Fe2O3 +3 iron(III)oxide

MnCl2 This requires a Roman numeral

-2 +2 -1 +2 MnCl2

+2 MnCl2

manganese(II)chloride
MnCl2 Answer: manganese(II)chloride

K2S potassium sulfide

CaF2 Answer: calcium fluoride

N2O3 This requires Greek prefixes

N2O3 Answer: dinitrogen trioxide

Ag2O silver oxide

CBr4 This requires Greek prefixes carbon tetrabromide

Compounds with Polyatomic Ions

a polyatomic ion carbonate K2CO3 K2CO3 +1 -2

K2CO3 Answer: potassium carbonate

nitrate Mg(NO3)2 NO3 +2 -1 Answer: magnesium nitrate

sulfate BaSO4 SO4 +2 -2 barium sulfate

phosphate Na3PO4 PO4 -3 +1 sodium phosphate

(NH4)2CrO4 (NH4)2CrO4 NH4 CrO4 ammonium chromate ammonium chromate -2
+1 ammonium chromate

-2 +2 -1 Cu(OH)2

+2 Cu(OH)2 copper(II) hydroxide

KClO potassium hypochlorite

permanganate KMnO4 MnO4 potassium permanganate

-2 +2 nitrite Ni(NO2)2 NO2 -1

Ni(NO2)2 nickel(II)nitrite

Cr(C2H3O2)2 C2H3O2 acetate -2 +2 -1
acetate is CH3COO-1 in your textbook

+2 Cr(C2H3O2)2 chromium(II)acetate

the end
