Naming Compounds
2
How you name a compound depends on whether the compound is ionic or covalent.
An ionic compound is a combination of a metal and nonmetal. A covalent compound is a combination of a nonmetal with another nonmetal.
3
nonmetals metals ionic compound = metal and nonmetal.
covalent compound = nonmetal and nonmetal.
4
Covalent compounds are named with Greek prefixes.
Ionic compounds require a Roman numeral if the metal’s charge is unknown. Covalent compounds are named with Greek prefixes. Roman numeral Examples: CuS is called copper(II) sulfide N2O3 is called dinitrogen trioxide N2O3 is called dinitrogen trioxide Greek prefixes

compounds that require Greek prefixes
compounds that require Roman numerals
6
Ready? Here we go…... …naming compounds.
7
KI potassium iodide ide Binary compounds end in -ide.
8
CaCl2 calcium chloride ide Notice the ide ending?
9
Na2O +1 -2 sodium oxide The reason there’s two Na ions in the formula is because the sodium loses 1 electron to O, but O needs two electrons.
10
FeO This requires a Roman numeral ?
(which is the charge on the iron ion)
11
+2 -2 FeO
12
+2 FeO Answer: iron(II)oxide
13
