Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent to blow up King and Parliament. Three score barrels were laid below to prove old England’s overthrow;

3. The Gunpowder Plot
In 1605 there was an attempted assassination of the English King James I, and the entire House of Lords.
It was believed that this assassination would cause a popular uprising against the government
The end goal was to put James I’s daughter, Elizabeth Stuart, as the Queen of England

4. Reasons for the Plot
Elizabeth I, daughter of Henry VIII, had instituted the Elizabethan Religious Settlement.
This required all people appointed to public office to swear allegiance to the Monarchs as the head of the Anglican Church.
This lead to the marginalization of Catholicism.

5. Eventually James I would come to the throne of England.
Before his rule he has always been more moderate towards Catholics, and many thought he would end the persecution.
When the treatment of Catholics didn’t improve under James, the Gunpowder Plot began to be formed.

7. Guy Fawkes
Robert Catesby originated the plot with the goal of re-establishing Catholicism in England.
Guy (Guido) Fawkes was recruited into the plot as he was a devout Catholic and an expert with explosives
The plot would grow in size, and eventually eight men would be involved

8. Discovering the Plot
A anonymous letter was shown to the King on November 1st.
A watch was placed on the House of Lords with multiple failed searches taking place.
On the night of November 5th Fawkes was found guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder. He was over taken before he could explode the powder.

9. Punishment
After the Plot was discovered all the conspirators would eventually be captured.
They were tortured in the Tower of London for information about other plots, and to determine in others knew of their conspiracy.
Eventually all men were found guilty of “high treason” and were executed by being hung, then drawn and quartered.

10. 5th of November
A law was passed in 1606 establishing 5th November as a holiday.
Children often made effigies of Guy Fawkes, and burned them.
Some people would shoot off fireworks
The night became known as Bonfire Night, Fireworks Night, or Guy Fawkes Night.

11. Today
The 5th of November still remains a popular custom in Britain till this day.
The evening is generally spent with friends around a giant bonfire watching fireworks.
Guy Fawkes was re- popularized by the Graphic Novel & Movie V for Vendetta
