4 Lease: Legally binding contract signed between renter & landlord Can be 1-year, 6-month, month-to-month, etc Tenant: person renting apartment or house Landlord: Owner of apartment or house Security Deposit: money given to landlord before moving in Covers costs of potential damages, unpaid rent, etc. Money is returned at end of lease if no damages

5 Utilities: refers to bills such as heat, electricity, water, garbage, etc. Always ask what utilities you have to pay for (some can be included in the rent) Sublease or Sublet: someone else lives in your apartment & pays rent when you are not there some contracts allow this, others don’t

6 What determines house/apartment prices?
The Four P’s Proximity to Points of Interest (POI) POI’s = schools, stores, transportation, entertainment, etc. Perceived Quality of Neighborhood Visually appealing? Safe? Excellent schools? Position of apartment/house What floor apartment? Corner house? Particularities of apartment/house Square footage, # of bedrooms/bathrooms, amenities studio: no separate bedroom (one big room) efficiency: smaller version of studio (small appliances)

“Apartment for Rent” signs – call and go see it! Online – call and go see it! Rental agencies (may charge a fee) Craigslist, etc. (usually no fee) ANYONE CAN POST ANYTHING ON CRAIGSLIST!!
