5 Freud’s (1900) Dream Theory
TITLE Freud’s (1900) Dream Theory

6 I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO…
SIGMUND FREUD You need to remember the name FREUD especially when talking about dreams having meaning. He was a doctor who believed dreaming was a very important part to a persons life, he believed that dreams were a way revealing a persons unconscious wishes and desires.

7 THE UNCONCIOUS Conscious Mind- what we are aware of and what we remember and therefore able to discuss and deal with. Unconscious Mind- A part of the mind that is not accessible and is completely hidden Repression-Freud believed that some of what is in the unconscious is repressed information which is where the conscious pushes something into the unconscious mind to help forget so they don’t have to deal with it. This is not deliberate but means a person may have ‘dark secrets’ they don’t know they have.

8 THE UNCONCIOUS Freud believed that our unconscious thoughts, wishes and desires guide a lot of our behaviour. He also believe that the unconscious consists of 90% of our thinking and that it is through our dreams that we uncover our unconscious thoughts, wishes and desires

9 WHO HAS A DREAM THAT THEY WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHARE?
What do you think it means?

10 FEATURES OF DREAMS: According to Freud there are two things to consider… Manifest Content- This is the story of the dream that the dreamer tells Latent Content- This is the underlying meaning of the dream- the hidden content of the dream.

11 DREAMWORK What the mind is doing whilst dreaming to help protect the dreamer which includes keeping unconscious thoughts hidden and repressed.

12 CONDENSATION When many ideas appear as one idea within a dream. These separate elements are important in uncovering repressed material so that one idea needs to be unpicked.

13 DISPLACEMENT When something that seems to be unimportant in the dream is made central, to shift attention from what is really important.

14 SECONDARY ELABORATION
Using muddled ideas from dreamwork to build a whole story. How the dreamer builds a story when telling what the dream is about, adding to and changing things, which makes analysis hard.
